Stravinsky's Firebird
Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores Stravinsky's fantastical Firebird Suite, alongside Handel's sorcerers, Bizet's circle dance and Duke Ellington's magical octotonic scale.
Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores Stravinsky's fantastical Firebird Suite, mapping it in a vivid musical landscape. It was taken from Stravinsky's 1910 ballet - his first collaboration with the notorious impresario Sergei Diaghilev - and it was an instant sensation. The Suite showcases the music of the main characters: a lovelorn prince, 13 princesses, a miraculous bird of fire, and the evil Dark Lord himself, Kashchei. Sara's journey of connections discovers another coven of sorcerers, along with circle dancing from Bizet and Gabriel Fauré's lilting lullaby. There's also an encounter with Haydn's London, and we find the magical thread that binds Johann Sebastian Bach to Duke Ellington - the otherworldly octotonic scale.
