Don't Come Empty Handed!

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Swarzy

A spiritual comment and prayer to start the day with Swarzy

Good morning!

Growing up in my Caribbean household, there was one rule whenever we were invited round to someone’s house: “Don’t walk with your two long han’!” Translation? DON’T TURN UP EMPTY-HANDED! Whether it was a drink, a dessert or even spare cutlery, you had to bring something. My family drummed that into me from early! This week, I’ve been exploring the topic of ‘welcoming people’, especially how hosts can make people feel welcome. But here’s the thing: guests have a part to play too!

When I became a Christian at 14, I joined my church youth group, where I learnt that hospitality wasn’t just about opening your home. It was sitting beside someone who’d come by themselves. Offering to grab them a drink when getting your own. Remembering someone’s name so you could introduce them to others. Small gestures. But BIG impact. Because sometimes, the reason someone feels welcome enough to return isn’t always the host. It’s the loving welcome from another guest! Romans 12:10 encourages us to: “Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.”

I pray.

Father God, thank you for every invitation we’ve received. Help us never take someone’s welcome for granted. Teach us to notice others, make room for them and honour them with kindness. May we bring your love wherever we go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

So the next time you’re invited somewhere, hear my mum’s voice saying, “Don’t go empty handed But don’t just ask, “What should I bring?” Pray, “Who can I make feel welcome?” Bring the cake, bring the drinks, bring the spare cutlery if you must! But whatever you do, bring a beautiful welcome too!

Bless you!
