  2. Everton 3-1 Coventry City: What Moyes and Barry saidpublished at 22:40 GMT 6 November

    Media caption,

Everton boss David Moyes, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I wasn't quite so sure about a good performance. We got a performance, and we got a result, but I have to say Coventry made it really difficult for us.

"You can see why they have picked up some really good results. They won at Forest and beat Sunderland the other week. They had a couple of decisions that might have gone in their favour and against us tonight.

"It was good, but in the end, we got the goals which mattered and when you win in the Premier League you take it because it is so hard to get the wins."

"We gave away a really poor goal but the reaction from there was really good. Important that Thierno Barry got another couple of goals tonight, which was huge for us.

"He can smile at me now and say I told you so and that's good. We always liked him, and we want him to keep scoring. He's missed quite a few chances, but tonight he got important goals for us.

"He's becoming an important piece for us, and he's got 10 goals for us, which is really good."

On the James Tarkowski hair pull and Thierno Barry's second goal being potential handball: "I've seen the goal, I didn't think it hit his hand. I've certainly not seen the hair pull, that's for sure.

"I think a hair pull nowadays only gets you a booking, doesn't it? I need to see if it was a hair pull in the first place, because I've not seen that myself and I didn't even know about it, but I will get a look at it and see."

On Jack Grealish and when Everton fans may see him again: "There's no more detail at the moment."

Everton striker Thierno Barry, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's always a pleasure to score and for my team to win, so I'm very happy. I just worked a lot during this summer so we can see the results, so I'm happy, and I need to continue like this to help my team win every game.

"To be fair, sometimes it is difficult when you miss a lot of chances. Your mind is sometimes bad, but I always work to do my best.

On playing at Hill Dickinson: "It's always a pleasure to play at home. The fans here are incredible. They sing from the first minute until the end. It is a real pleasure to score here and to play here."

On only Erling Haaland scoring more goals than him in all competitions: "I'm very happy because I'm a fan of him. I watch a lot of videos of him and try and do the things he does. If I can play with him until the end to get the Golden Boot, I will try."

On his dance celebration: "I was on TikTok yesterday and I saw an NFL guy do the celebration and I said to Tyrique [George] if we score tomorrow, we do the dance like that, but I think he was shy to do it, so I did the dance alone."

    Did you know?

    • The result was just the third time Everton had gone 1-0 down in the second half of a Premier League game then come back to win by more than one goal, along with 3-1 wins over West Ham in November 2008 and Burnley in September 2021.

    • Among Premier League players, only Erling Haaland (14) has more goals in all competitions this season than Thierno Barry (10), with the Everton forward now scoring more goals in 13 games this season than he managed in 41 games last season (eight).

  3. Everton analysis: Barry the lightning rod for Toffeespublished at 22:14 GMT 6 November

    Nick Mashiter
    Football reporter

What a season Thierno Barry is having already.

After scoring just eight goals last term, following a £27m move from Villarreal the 24-year-old has already eclipsed that.

He has 10 goals in 13 appearances after these two goals against Coventry, having taken 16 games to get his first Everton goal in 2025-26.

The striker is now the Premier League's second top scorer, level with Liverpool's Aleksander Isak on six - three being Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

There may have been some fortune in his second-half winner as it was bundled in but Barry is making his own luck and is in the form of his Everton career.

  4. Everton v Coventry: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 15:42 GMT 6 November

    Matthew Hobbs
    BBC Sport journalist

Everton will attempt to win back-to-back Premier League games against improving Coventry City in a first meeting between the clubs in 25 years.

BBC Sport examines some of the key themes going into their meeting at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton will attempt to win a third game in the space of just 10 days when they host former Toffees boss Frank Lampard and his Coventry side on Friday.

The two victories over the past week – against Newcastle United in both the Carabao Cup and Premier League – have been achieved without Jack Grealish, who has been suspended by the club following a breach of indiscipline reportedly linked to a missed training session.

Manager David Moyes confirmed on Thursday that Grealish will again miss out at Hill Dickinson Stadium and in his absence other Everton players have stepped to the fore.

Striker Thierno Barry scored in both wins against Newcastle to take his tally for this season to eight, already matching his total from 2025-26 despite playing 29 fewer matches.

Winger Tyrique George, 20, provided the winning assist on Monday at St James' Park, where 19-year-old midfielder Harrison Armstrong was again an influential performer.

The club's younger players have been growing in influence this season and while Moyes' hand has been partly forced by player departures resulting in a small playing squad, the average age of Everton's starting XI has been the youngest of the Scot's managerial career.

Everton's youth have been ably supported by an experienced core in recent weeks, with midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall back close to his best.

The 28-year-old has created 21 chances in the Premier League this season, more than double the tally of any other Everton player.

Barry, George and Dewsbury-Hall will all likely be needed if Everton are to continue their winning run against a Coventry side improving steadily in recent weeks.

The Sky Blues failed to score as they lost their opening four matches on their return to the Premier League but they have since won three of the past five, including a 3-1 victory over Sunderland last time out.

Lampard's side have been far more clinical in front of goal in those five matches, scoring nine times from an expected goals tally of just 4.12.

It is the biggest overperformance of xG by any Premier League team over the five-game period.

Everton and Coventry have not faced each other since 2001 but Lampard is likely to get a warm reception on Merseyside having steered the Toffees away from the threat of relegation in 2021-22 with a win in their penultimate match of that campaign against Crystal Palace.

In the opposition dugout, Moyes will celebrate equalling Harry Catterick's club record of 592 games at the helm in a first appearance against Coventry – the 45th side he has faced in his Premier League career.

  5. Dewsbury-Hall is 'close' to making England squad - Tuchelpublished at 14:07 GMT 6 November

England boss Thomas Tuchel explained why Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was left out of the England squad.

Speaking at his press conference after the squad was announced, he said: "He is close. A very good player, a very good season. In the way we play now, I don't see him in central midfield - more as an eight or a 10, in the finishing part of the game.

"The competition is very, very high in our squad in this position.

"As you know, he was in our squad of 55 [for the World Cup]. You can see his quality and he was very close."

  6. Moyes to reach Everton landmarkpublished at 12:33 GMT 6 November

When Everton take on Coventry later on Friday, David Moyes will equal Harry Catterick's record for games as Toffees manager.

The pair will sit on 592, with Howard Kendall third on 542.

  7. 'Barry is getting in the right areas'published at 12:07 GMT 6 November

    Media caption,

Everton fan James Costello says 20 goals is an achievable target for Thierno Barry this season.

The striker has already matched last season's goal tally of eight after just 12 games.

Costello told BBC Radio Merseyside: "He has been getting in better areas. He has improved his technique and everything. He just needs to convert more of these chances.

"My nan would've scored the goal on Monday! But still, he's getting in the right areas. That's what he lacked last season and what he has improved on magnificently this season. Long may it continue.

"I definitely think 20 goals is realistic, especially now we're in the quarter-finals of the League Cup and we've still got the FA Cup to come. We're not even a third of the way through the Premier League season so 20 goals is definitely achievable."

    Thomas TuchelImage source, Getty Images

England manager Thomas Tuchel has named his squad for November's matches against Croatia and Spain.

Key talking points include no Cole Palmer again, no Phil Foden, no Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and a return for Ben White, while Fulham's Josh King is included.

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), James Trafford (Leeds United), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace)

Defenders: Ezri Konsa (Arsenal), Marc Guehi (Man City), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid), Lewis Hall (Newcastle United), Jarrell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Inter Milan), Ben White (Arsenal).

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jobe Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Josh King (Fulham), James Garner (Everton), Elliot Anderson (Man City), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Declan Rice (Arsenal).

Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United), Anthony Gordon (Barcelona), Rio Ngumoha (Liverpool), Morgan Rogers (Chelsea).

  9. Sutton's predictions: Everton v Coventrypublished at 07:56 GMT 6 November

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

Like all the promoted teams, Coventry are having a go in games.

It has worked too, because they have picked up a few wins so far - they have three in the Premier League, as many as sixth-place Brentford.

It has been a strange season for the Sky Blues so far, because their performances have been a bit up and down. They can look very open, but those wins are the reward for their brave approach.

I don't see them getting anything here, however, on Frank Lampard's return to his former club.

Everton are not a free-scoring side, but I think they will have a bit too much nous for Coventry.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

  10. Moyes on Grealish, matching Catterick's record and Coventrypublished at 14:54 GMT 5 November

    Millie Sian
    BBC Sport journalist

    Media caption,

Everton boss David Moyes has been speaking to the media before Friday's Premier League game against Coventry City at Hill Dickinson Stadium (kick-off 20:00 GMT).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Jarrad Branthwaite is being "nursed along a little bit" after being forced off with cramp in Monday's 1-0 victory over Newcastle United. It is unclear if he will feature this weekend.

    • Jack Grealish "won't be available" but Everton intend on "working with him again soon". When asked if the international break will be a good opportunity to resolve the situation, Moyes replied: "We will see. We need to wait and see how things go."

    • On equalling Harry Catterick's record and taking charge of his 592nd game as Everton manager against Coventry: "I got told about this a few weeks ago. I hadn't realised I was that close. I'm very proud to be up there and talked about in the same breath as him. I wish I had the trophies he had to go with it, though!"

    • The team deserve "great praise" for their start to the season, "especially after everything that went on in the summer", but it is "very hard to judge the league standings" right now so the collective aim is to "just get as many points on the board as possible".

    • He said he anticipates a "really difficult" and "interesting" game against Coventry, who have had "some really good results" recently and picked up nine points in their past five league games.

    • Frank Lampard managed Everton "through a really difficult period" between January 2022 and January 2023, but he has proven he is a "really good manager" during his time at CBS Arena.

    • On Thierno Barry equalling his eight-goal tally from last season in just 12 appearances: "He is settling down. I know it sounds like an excuse but we took a gamble in buying him, knowing that he probably wouldn't be right straightaway. It isn't all right at the minute, but Erling Haaland should be worried because he is just behind him now! Let's hope he can keep scoring and keep improving for us."

    • Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall "certainly must be knocking on the door" for a maiden England call-up, but Thomas Tuchel also has "so many good players to choose from" in his position.

    • Moyes added: "We will be pleased for him to be recognised for England so long as he keeps doing well for Everton. He has come from a couple of clubs that have recently won trophies and achieved success, so he has an idea of what that feels like which is really important for us in our mission to get back into Europe."

    • Lastly, when asked if there is a plan in place for the January transfer window, he replied: "No, at the moment there are no plans."

  11. 'Short on numbers' but plenty to 'be positive about'published at 09:15 GMT 5 November

    Media caption,

Everton fan Matt Dillon says fans have a "lot to be positive about" and it remains clear where David Moyes must strengthen as the Toffees look to build on a fine start to the season.

Speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside, Dillon said: "Obviously we are short on numbers but, for me, we are certainly not short on quality. I think there are players there and they have shown it.

"They showed it last season and the players that have come in this season, there is real quality there. I think everyone, not just Evertonians, I think people from the outside who watch Everton regularly know where we need to strengthen in terms of the squad.

"The lads that are out there every week, you can't knock them for effort and in terms of the way we set up, I think we are really solid."

"I think there's a really good core there to be taken on. You look at the league now, we're seventh. We could go into the top four or five on Friday against Coventry. You look at what's going on in the League Cup as well, there's a lot to be positive about."

  12. 'I would prefer him to rest' - fan views on Dewsbury-Hall for Englandpublished at 15:03 GMT 4 November

We asked for your views on whether Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall should be called up to the England squad for this November's international break.

Here are some of your comments:

Paul: Dewsbury-Hall definitely deserves a chance. From a selfish perspective it would be good for him to have a two week rest rather than risk an injury, but he would really benefit being around the England camp. There are maybe others who will get the nod ahead of him but the experience can only benefit him and England and he has earned his chance!

Anton: I absolutely agree and think that he should receive a call-up. He genuinely is an excellent player and person in everything he does. His technical ability is beyond reproach, his personality and character are beyond exemplary - he just seems to be an all-round nice guy who happens to be an excellent footballer. I would love to see him played deeper too (both for us and England) because he really is capable of influencing play all over the pitch but that can leave our sole striker isolated.

Alex: Normally, I think he just misses out, but with Eze and Gibbs-White off form, this is a real chance for KDH to get a chance under Tuchel.

Thomas: I don't think he really moves the needle for England. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great player and he would be a solid squad option for Tuchel, but they could equally live without him just fine.

Peter: Selfishly, I would prefer him to rest during the international break and be extra motivated to prove to Tuchel he is good enough to play, not just sit on a bench. Garner needs a break too to fully recover from hernia surgery. Both are key players for Everton in every game. Branthwaite should be called up . He should be centre-back for England for the next 20 years!

  13. Moyes' squad 'small but perfectly formed' published at 11:05 GMT 4 November

    Giulia Bould
    BBC Radio Merseyside reporter

Tyrique George of Everton and James Tarkowski of Everton celebrateImage source, Getty Images

A lot was made after the deadline day debacle that left Everton with just 18 outfield players, but maybe it is more a case of the saying - 'small but perfectly formed'.

Aside from the defeats by Chelsea and Arsenal, the Toffees are battling against all their critics as well as their opponents to sit seventh, and could go into the top four if they beat Coventry at home on Friday evening.

While David Moyes would no doubt have wanted three or four more in his set-up, the players he has at his disposal have qualities that means his side are tough to beat.

Captain James Tarkowski is having his best season in an Everton shirt, leading by example.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is rightly being touted as someone who should be in the England squad due to be announced later this week, while Thierno Barry has defied many who wrote him off having scored eight goals so far - the number he got in the whole of the last campaign.

Despite the dramatic 24 hours that almost saw him sold in the summer, Harrison Armstrong has started every Premier League game at just 19-years-old, and Tyrique George has been exciting many on the left wing to a level that means Jack Grealish has not been missed.

Everton are also set to face League Two Fleetwood Town in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, a competition they have never won.

Right now, there might not be a long list of names on the squad list, but it has increased the togetherness and brought about a positive feeling and mentality that might have been lost if the manager had a huge dressing room.

  14. 'There is a bigger issue around Grealish'published at 09:08 GMT 4 November

    Media caption,

"All I'm giving out is that he is unavailable at the moment."

Those were the words of Everton boss David Moyes when he was asked about Jack Grealish's exclusion from the Toffees' team in the 1-0 victory against Newcastle.

On the latest developments, BBC Radio Merseyside reporter Giulia Bould said: "We are led to believe that Manchester City are in these conversations that are going on with Jack Grealish at Everton right now.

"The fact he is not even in the squad - the cup game [against Newcastle] we were told it was for discipline reasons.

"Now he is not fit, so he is evidently not been in training sessions.

"Whether that is part of the suspension as well, would you not put him in the under-21s if you wanted to discipline him, but keep his fitness?

"To me, this suggests there is a bigger issue around Grealish. It is concerning because he seems a good person.

"He is clearly a talented footballer to get where he has been in his career, but the amount of money he is on for a loan deal, I am surprised that the loan hasn't been cut short if there is this bigger problem."
