Make a diya lamp decoration for Diwali

Celebrate Diwali this year by making your own diya lamp decoration. Diyas are traditional lamps used to decorate homes during the festival and symbolise light overcoming darkness.

You will need
  • Coloured card/paper
  • Glue stick or PVA
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Beads
  • Pencil
  • A round object to draw around (we used a glass)

🚨 Be careful when using scissors, ask a grown-up to help you!🚨

How to make a diya lamp

  1.  Draw circles using your round object and a pencil onto the coloured paper.

  2. Carefully cut them out with your scissors.

  3. Then fold those circles individually in half and half again, so they're in quarters.

  4. Take some glue and stick your quarters together.

  5. Then you need to make the flame for the middle. So, fold another piece of paper in half and draw a semi-circle on the crease.

  6. Carefully then cut them out and you will have created ovals.

  7. Stick four folded ovals together.

  8. Take some string about one metre in length thread a bead right to the end of the string and tie a knot, this makes sure the beads don't fall off.

  9. Thread on as many beads as you like.

  10. Add the first diya lamp and place the string in the middle of your quarters. Glue the final side together.

  11. Stick the oval flame onto the string the same way.

  12. Repeat these steps until you have a few paper diya on your string.

What is Diwali and what is a diya?

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions of people around the world. The festival is observed by people of several religions, including Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism. During Diwali, families and friends come together to celebrate with lights, decorations, food and festivities.

A diya (pronounced DEE-yuh) is a traditional lamp often associated with Diwali. Diyas are used to decorate homes and symbolise light overcoming darkness, making them an important part of many Diwali celebrations.
