Feifei
Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases and expressions used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them too. I'm Feifei.
Becca
And I'm Becca.
Feifei
How are you, Becca?
Becca
I'm good, thanks Feifei. I've noticed you've changed the way you style your hair. I must say, I'm so here for it!
Feifei
Thank you for noticing, Becca! But, you're here for what exactly?
Becca
What I mean by being 'here for it' is that I support it – it being your change of hairstyle. The phrase 'here for it' expresses approval or agreement for something. It could even encourage something or show that I really like it.
Feifei
I see. So, it doesn't mean that you're physically in any sort of place?
Becca
Right. It's not really about being in a place. I could text you from afar that 'I'm here for it', and I could be miles away.
Feifei
I see. Let's listen to some more examples.
Examples
Have you noticed the toilets in the office today are really stinky? I'm so not here for it.
My friend wants to try lots of new things this year so she suggested we go to ballet classes and, honestly, I'm here for it.
The weather's getting colder, it's getting so much cosier. I'm so here for it.
Feifei
Becca, it seems that this expression often follows a statement?
Becca
Yes. When we use 'here for it', we need to make sure that we've stated, or asked about, the thing that we support. Remember, this expression needs a context because the pronoun 'it' refers to what was previously said.
Feifei
How else can we use this expression?
Becca
We could say 'I'm here for that' but for things that aren’t in front of us at that moment. So, I could say something like 'Oh, you're going to organise the next staff dinner. I'm so here for that.'
Feifei
Or I could say, 'Learning English with BBC Learning English? I'm so here for that!'
Becca
That's it for this programme but join us next time to learn more English phrases and expressions. But for now, it's goodbye!
Feifei
Goodbye!
