The White Sox players celebrate after defeating the Houston Astros in the Wild Card Series.

The Chicago White Sox are the fairytale story of the final eight.

They had become the laughing stock of Major League Baseball, recording three consecutive seasons with more than 100 losses before 2026, but this year everything has changed.

They finished with a respectable record of 84 wins to 78 losses which was just enough to edge into the American League Wild Card Series.

They were ruthless in that series earlier this week, dispatching the Houston Astros in two games to win a post-season series for the first time since 2005 - a special year in White Sox history because it delivered their first World Series title in nearly fifty years.

The Guardians won the American League Central Division for the third season in a row to skip the Wild Card Series and move directly to this stage.

Their record of 85 wins to 77 defeats was only one better than the White Sox but they have experience vastly beyond their opponents of post-season baseball.

Their most recent Division Series was in 2024 when they overcame the Detroit Tigers only to fall to defeat against the New York Yankees in the final four.

And welcome to the Division Series!

We are down to the final eight in the play-offs and the journey to the World Series at the end of October just keeps getting shorter.

Two of the sides left will make it there and play for the biggest prize of them all later this month, but first they have to come through this best-of-five challenge to book their place in the final four.

We have two games on the BBC this evening with MLB Bases Covered Live.

Later we will head over to Los Angeles where the Dodgers will welcome the Atlanta Braves for the opening game of their National League Division Series contest.

But first it is the American League Division Series opener that sees the Chicago White Sox take on the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.

Who will get off to the perfect start and who will be left playing catch-up? It's time for knockout baseball.
