In-form Rovers forward Andri Gudjohnsen scored twice to earn Blackburn three points in difficult conditions against Wrexham.

The Icelandic forward struck just moments before half-time after Red Dragons keeper Anthony Patterson could only parry Sam Morsy's initial shot.

Wrexham were uninspired for much of the first half but pressed forward after the break as Sam Smith, Kieffer Moore and Joe Worrall all went close to an equaliser.

But Gudjohnsen settled matters with 11 minutes left, blasting high into the net from close range for his ninth goal of the season.

The win takes Blackburn to 10th in the Championship while Wrexham, who have now won just one of their last seven away games, are 17th.

Hayden Carter hit the post before Blackburn went ahead.

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray was defiant following the 3-2 defeat at West Brom last Saturday, and in driving rain his side started on the front foot here.

Jayden Fevrier went close early on after cutting on his left foot and bending a shot narrowly wide, and Dapo Afolayan also fired off-target as the hosts threatened an opener.

Hayden Carter came within inches of breaking the deadlock when his stabbed effort from Todd Cantwell's corner hit the inside of the post and rolled across the line - but moments before the break Gudjohnsen struck.

And the opening goal was a soft one from Wrexham's point of view as Patterson failed to deal with Morsy's tame effort and Gudjohnsen made no mistake from the rebound.

The visitors were uninspired for 45 minutes - their best chance coming when Moore headed tamely over - and needed Patterson to partially make amends after the break as he denied Afolayan with his feet.

But Phil Parkinson's men finally responded and Sam Smith nearly levelled when he glanced a header wide from Callum O'Hare's cross.

They went closer still when Moore's goal-bound effort was blocked by Carter and Joe Morrell blasted the loose ball inches past the post.

But with the home crowd braced for a tense finale, the impressive Cantwell found Gudjohnsen and the club's top scorer finished clinically from close range.

Parkinson immediately sent on Ollie Rathbone, Danny Imray and Ryan Longman in a bid for a late comeback, but it was Blackburn who made it three successive wins at Ewood Park for the first time since October 2024.

Analysis - Gudjohnsen shines to put pressure back on Parkinson

Last season, Gudjohnsen scored seven times in 25 games for Blackburn. This season, he has already hit nine goals in just 12 appearances across all competitions.

Mowbray's side can now afford to look up as opposed to over their shoulders, with just two points between themselves and the play-off places.

A difficult away trip to Swansea beckons next weekend before back-to-back home games for a team that appear much improved, winning five of their last six.

As for Mowbray's opposite number, Parkinson, a win at Preston last time out seemingly lifted some of the pressure that had been building.

But in a week when he became the third longest-serving manager in the top four divisions of English football, this uninspired display will put his position firmly back in the spotlight.

Few can discredit the job he's done in bringing the club from the National League to the Championship, but his Wrexham side are currently struggling to impose themselves in attack.

Another defeat at Sheffield United on Friday, and the whispers will only grow louder.

Post-match reaction

Blackburn Rovers head coach Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"When you play Wrexham, you have got to put a lot of work into it. We scored two, but had other chances to score more goals.

"I'm really pleased [with the win], and we are really looking forward to playing a team at the top of the division.

"We want to test ourselves, and it's much easier to do that on the back of a win.

"I see a Blackburn team that is fighting, running back to their own goal, blocking shots and making first contact for headers. I'm really pleased with them today."

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told his club's social media team:

"We had 22, 23 attempts today - but only one on target.

"We needed to be more clinical and at least test the keeper and we've got to look at that.

"The game was separated by two moments. Football never changes, it's about that end product and ours wasn't where we needed it to be to win the game today.

"There was no lack of effort today the lads have given everything. We just lacked that quality in the right areas."
