Shaw hat-trick gives five-star Man City dominant win over West Ham

Khadija Shaw struck her first Women's Super League hat-trick of the season as Manchester City returned to the top of the table with a 5-0 win against West Ham.

Her impressive haul came days after she surprisingly missed out on the 26-player Fifpro Women's World XI shortlist, and continues an impressive run of scoring in every league game she has started this season.

After Shaw's first-half opener, City ran riot after the break as Aoba Fujino and Iman Beney each scored their first league goals of the season.

The win returns City to the top of the Women's Super League table as title rivals Chelsea were held by Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Japan international Fujino passed up two similar chances to put City ahead at the Joie Stadium, striking the near post then firing wide when choosing the far post at the second opportunity.

Shaw had earlier been denied by a superb block by Laia Codina but showed typical composure to put City ahead, sliding the ball in after an attractive passing move which began with Lauren Hemp winning the ball high up the pitch.

Attacking with renewed vigour after half-time, City missed a big chance to double their lead through Fujino, who hit the crossbar from seven yards out.

Shaw headed in a Hemp cross for City's second, West Ham goalkeeper Constance Picaud-Inconnu getting a hand to the ball but only punching it in via the underside of her crossbar.

With her fourth and most challenging chance of the afternoon, Fujino got her goal, stealing the ball back inside her own half before going it alone and finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

It was then Swiss substitute Beney's turn to open her league account as her effort deflected in off West Ham midfielder Katie Zelem - after an intelligent cut-back by Hemp.

The most prolific hat-trick scorer in WSL history, Shaw found time to complete her ninth, assisted by Grace Clinton, before being substituted off with her side five goals up.

Analysis: Five-star City stride to summit

This was close to a perfect afternoon for Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz.

His side spent a fortnight in second place after failing to win for the first time in their WSL campaign with a draw at Manchester United. Level on points with Chelsea, a much healthier goal difference had put their rivals in control.

Asked before their match against West Ham whether he felt a pressure to outscore Chelsea each week, Jeglertz said: "The league is so tight, so I can't see that goal difference is going to make us the winning team in this league. For us, it's about getting the points that we need."

He appeared to be proven right as Chelsea stuttered at Stamford Bridge, dropping points for the first time since the opening day with a draw against Everton which allowed City back into pole position.

In the meantime, City had done everything they could to chase their rivals down.

Against West Ham, City claimed only their second league clean sheet of the season - a first for first-choice goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita - and did so without captain Alex Greenwood, who was missing with a small injury which is due to be assessed.

Days after her Fifpro snub, Shaw showed her worth again, her 12-goal WSL tally now double that of the division's next best scorers. Better still, goals by Fujino and Beney suggested that the responsibility does not lie solely with the Jamaica star.

The defending champions hold a two-point lead at the top of the table going into their visit to Chelsea next Saturday (13:30 GMT).
