New Burnley midfielder Florentino Luis says it is a "special day" after completing a loan move from Benfica.

The 26-year-old will join initially on loan for a £1.73m fee, but there is an option to buy for a reported £20.8m next summer, which would make him the club's record signing.

Luis made 181 appearances for the Portuguese giants across six seasons and has been a regular feature for them in recent Champions League campaigns.

"Playing in the Premier League has always been a dream of mine, so this is a special day for me and my family," he told club media.

"It's the biggest and best league in the world and to be joining Burnley at this time is really exciting for me.

"I am really looking forward to playing for this historic club and giving my all for the Burnley supporters."

Luis will wear the number 16 shirt and becomes Burnley's 10th signing of the summer.

Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis is due to have a medical at Burnley today before completing what could become a club record purchase.

The 26-year-old will join initially on loan for a £1.73m fee, but there is a conditional obligation to buy for £20.8m should the move be made permanent.

Manager Scott Parker has secured a major coup, with Luis expected to be the Clarets' last incoming transfer of the summer.

Burnley are continuing to work on outgoings before Monday's 19:00 BST deadline.

We asked for your views on what is still needed by Burnley on transfer deadline day.

Here are some of your comments:

Jack: A striker and midfielder. Armando Broja is never fit - a typicaly bad purchase by us.

Peter: We probably need two extra players. A defensive midfielder to stop the many runs that have been easily made right through our midfield. Secondly, a centre-back with presence who can both help and replace Maxime Esteve if he is injured.

Graham: Some interesting and, potentially, significant signings by Burnley, who now have an excessive squad, and a need to reduce. Too early to say how the new arrivals will fare as many, like Broja, have had very limited game time. Despite six goals in the past three outings, Burnley need to score more. Broja may be able to deliver. However, strengthening the attack should be a priority, along with the midfield. My two preferences in these areas have long been Josh Sargent (who should have the advantage of appealing to a niche American market and the club owners) and Gustavo Hamer.

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Manchester United and Burnley

Here are some of your comments:

    Man Utd fans

Anthony: Nothing has really changed as we are still the same situation in the sense chances are not taken and yet another goalkeeping mistake. Something has to give.

Andrew: United were very lucky to win. Missed opportunities to score goals and defensive errors that cost goals. Nothing has changed over the years. There have been some glimpses of quality football but, overall, nothing has changed. After being a fan for 55 years, I once could not wait to watch Manchester United play a game. Now, with the exception of a few games over the past years, I watch and cringe at the football that is being played. Manchester United have lost their way and are getting it wrong year after year. I'm starting to believe that they will never find their way back to consistently playing quality football.

Paul: United played some good football, particularly in the first half, but the game should have been won by half-time. Then we saw, once again, the need for a quality keeper!

Danyal: Finally a win that we can celebrate. It should have been easier than it actually was, but that's United's style nowadays. Sad to see Matheus Cunha get injured as he is definitely what makes the team click. We need to find that consistency now with the Manchester derby coming up. Hopefully after the international break we can continue. Ruben Amorim still needs time - let's back him!

    Burnley fans

Bruce: Better second-half performance, but gutted about the penalty decision. Yes, it was a foul, but it was outside the penalty box. If you do a mistimed sliding tackle outside of the box but slide into the box, it does not mean it's a penalty. It's a foul and the shirt pull should have been a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Graham: Dogged! Burnley fielded a scratch team with very little game time among most of the players - and it showed. A low-key performance demonstrating little urgency, but showing some nice touches leading to both goals. A decent, solid performance overall.

Andy: The lads played well, especially in the second half, but VAR is a disgrace! It's ruining the game. The ref had a good game but, unfortunately, VAR ruined all of that! Is there any point in having a referee any more?

Ian: Took an injury time penalty to beat us. Up the Clarets!

Burnley manager Scott Parker will be devastated at the result but can take a lot of satisfaction with his side's overall display.

Outplayed for the first half an hour, Burnley eventually got to grips with their task and were the better side around both their goals.

Skipper Josh Cullen was excellent. It was pure bad luck he should be credited with United going in front as the ball struck him on the back as it flew out from thudding the crossbar.

Although it was Ruben Amorim shaking his head after Bryan Mbeumo had scored to put the home side 2-1 ahead, Parker must have been feeling pretty irritated as barely 60 seconds had elapsed since Lyle Foster had intelligently used the space afforded to him as he made his way into the box and found the net from Jacob Bruun Larsen's cross.

The narrowest of offside decisions cost Foster a second and Hannibal Mejbri also went close against his old club.

It did seem Jaidon Anthony would be taking the plaudits on the short journey back to Lancashire. Instead, he will be asking himself why he grabbed Amad's shirt.

'Disappointed and gutted' - Parker on Man Utd defeat

Scott Parker spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Burnley's defeat against Manchester United: "My thoughts are I'm disappointed, gutted, but immensely proud of the team. Our reaction second half, I am proud.

"The way the game ends, it is the way the game has gone - quadruple checking every minute. The on field decision, the referee didn't give the foul. Then we have re-reffed it, VAR seeing a clear and obvious error. It's not the ref, it's a fella 200-odd miles away in a box. That's the way the game has gone.

"It's a sterile game, a long time ago when you had the passion and celebration - now you are standing around and waiting."

On what he changed at half-time: "We started really slowly, in the second half we were a threat and really deserving of the goals. I am proud of the group. Structurally we changed it, we could not land on second balls and gain any momentum. Our distances were a lot better in the second half."

Lyle Foster also spoke to Match of the Day: "We put so much in, and in the end the decision doesn't go your way which I think is unfair. It was really soft, and with roles reversed is it given to us? I don't know. It is heartbreaking, but it is what it is.

"I don't understand how it [his goal] was offside, and I've looked at it a few times. But that is how the game is now with VAR."

On Burnley's performance: "The way we played first half was not a proper demonstration of our game. We were shaken with the game plan, second half we regrouped. We were able to make chances, score two of them, including one from the long throw."

    Did you know?

Burnley have kept just one clean sheet in their last 28 Premier League away games (v Fulham in December 2023), conceding 50 goals in those fixtures combined.

  13. Man Utd v Burnley: Team newspublished at 14:02 BST 30 August 2025

    Manchester United's lineup against Fulham

Ruben Amorim makes one change from the team that drew at Fulham last weekend, with Diogo Dalot slotting in at left wing-back in place of Patrick Dorgu.

New signing Benjamin Sesko is back on the bench after playing the full 90 minutes in Wednesday's EFL Cup shock at Grimsby.

Noussair Mazraoui make the matchday squad for the first time this season after recovering from the injury he had at the start of pre-season.

Manchester United XI: Bayindir, Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw, Diallo, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Dalot, Mbeumo, Mount, Cunha.

Subs: Onana, Mazraoui, Maguire, Zirkzee, Dorgu, Ugarte, Heaven, Sesko, Mainoo.

Scott Parker sticks with the same starting line-up that beat Sunderland last weekend.

That means a return to Old Trafford for Hannibal Mejbri, who made 13 first-team appearances for the Red Devils before moving to Burnley last summer.

Veteran defender Kyle Walker is likely to receive a frosty reception given his Manchester City links.

Burnley XI: Dubravka, Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman, Ugochukwu, Cullen, Bruun Larsen, Mejbri, Anthony, Foster.

Subs: Weiss, Worrall, Edwards, Tchaouna, Flemming, Ramsey, Sonne, Pires, Laurent.

  15. Sutton's predictions: Man Utd v Burnleypublished at 11:03 BST 30 August 2025

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I haven't got a clue with this one, nothing would surprise me. I don't think there'll be a lot of goals in this game, but surely Manchester United need to bounce back with some kind of statement?

It's a bad week for United. They were played off the park by Grimsby in the first half and were ultimately humiliated. I know Ruben Amorim made eight changes but he threw the big guns on in the end and you don't know what sort of impact that loss will have across the club.

After Grimsby, I think Amorim is under huge pressure.

Burnley will be stubborn and resolute, and they do carry an attacking threat. Will Manchester United find a way? Something's telling me to pick United to win but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Burnley embarrassed them.

  16. Man Utd v Burnley: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 19:22 BST 29 August 2025

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Manchester United go in search of their first win of the season, taking on a Burnley side buoyed by last weekend's victory over Sunderland. BBC Sport takes a look at some of the key themes before Saturday's game.

United's EFL Cup exit to Grimsby, their first defeat against fourth-tier opposition in the competition, has increased the pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim, who has won just five league games this calendar year – three of them against teams now in the Championship.

United spent over £190m on attacking talent this summer, recruiting Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but obvious flaws have yet to be addressed. Fitting the trio into Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation means captain Bruno Fernandes has to be shoe-horned into a two-man midfield, a ploy that has rarely provided the right balance to United.

Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, meanwhile, struggled to deal with set-pieces in the Reds' opening two league games of the season. But last season's number one, Andre Onana, hardly pressed his claims for a recall at Blundell Park, gifting Grimsby a goal when he failed to claim a routine cross.

Amorim admitted on Wednesday "something has to change" and improvement is clearly overdue. His Premier League win percentage of 24.7% is the worst in the club's history, with no other permanent United manager having dropped below 50% in the competition.

Will Clarets deepen gloom at Old Trafford?

Burnley got their first win on the board last weekend courtesy of victory over fellow new boys Sunderland, meaning Scott Parker's side are vying to win consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since April 2022.

The Clarets have won just once away to United in the league since 1962 although they have only lost four of nine Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford, making them one of three visiting clubs – along with Chelsea and Manchester City – to have avoided defeat in over half of their games there.

They can now also call upon a player with plenty of winning experience at the Theatre of Dreams. Summer signing Kyle Walker has played in six Premier League victories at the stadium, a joint record for an away player.

Burnley have reached a club-to-club agreement on a loan deal for Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis with conditional obligation to buy.

The Clarets club would pay an initial £1.73m with a further £20.8m due at a later date should the move for the 26-year-old be made permanent.

However, the deal is yet to be formally completed as negotiations remain ongoing with the player over personal terms, and the move is also subject to a medical.

Manager Scott Parker now has to wait to see whether Luis joins for what could eventually be a club record fee.

Luis is a former Portugal Under-21 international who has spent time on loan Monaco and Getafe before returning to play over 100 league games at Benfica.
