Manchester City face the prospect of being without star striker Erling Haaland for Tuesday's Champions League game against AEK Athens.

The Norway international scored twice in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town to take his tally to eight Premier League goals for the season, leading the top-flight scoring charts once more.

But the 26-year-old suffered a blow to the foot in the game and is a doubt for the European night at Etihad Stadium, as City look to get back to winning ways in the competition after last week's 4-2 defeat by Paris St-Germain.

"To replace Erling is always difficult but we have some different options," said manager Enzo Maresca. "It also depends on the gameplan.

"At the moment, it is Erling. Why do we need to think of a different nine if Erling is there? If something happened or we need a different nine plan, we'll see."

It can be difficult for players to feature as back-ups to Haaland, as Julian Alvarez and Omar Marmoush have found in the past, but it was a surprise when Divin Mubama was allowed to join Championship side Southampton on loan in the summer.

It left City without a natural replacement in Haaland's absence.

Maresca has previously said Antoine Semenyo can be used "as a nine" but that plan is no longer available with the Ghanaian facing the prospect of missing up to 13 matches.

One option mooted by the Italian is midfielder Phil Foden, who ended his barren run in front of goal on Saturday by scoring his first Premier League goal since December.

"Phil can be one of the solutions," said Maresca. "He played already in the past in that position so could play again, but at the moment the number nine is Erling."

Could summer signing Iliman Ndiaye be another option?

The Senegal international was often deployed as a striker in Sheffield United's promotion-winning campaign in 2022-23, scoring 14 goals to help the Blades return to the Premier League.

Last season, Pep Guardiola said Rayan Cherki fits playing in the false nine role "perfectly", with the Frenchman scoring in a 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Brentford when used in that position.

  4. 'I am grateful to be fit and healthy' - Guehi on busy schedulepublished at 14:05 BST 19 October

Marc Guehi speaking to the mediaImage source, Getty Images

Marc Guehi has detailed the life of Manchester City player under a new manager during a packed autumn schedule.

The 26-year-old defender has played every minute of the past three games against Liverpool, Paris St-Germain and Ipswich in a week-long period.

"It's been enjoyable, to be honest, not to train and to play games," Guehi said, as City prepare to host AEK Athens in the Champions League on Tuesday.

"A lot of meetings and reviewing clips inside. When we can we go on the pitch to go through tactics before the game, but it is a lot of recovery and sleep to make sure the body is right for the next game."

When asked if he is "learning on the job" because of the lack of training, he said: "The clips we go through [are] things we can do better. For example, in the last game [against Ipswich], I know I can do better. It's as much learning as you can do on the pitch or off the field with the clips we're watching. We try to do it in the small amount of time we have.

"There is work we can do as a team because there are things that can happen before [goals], but when I look at those goals at the weekend, that is down to me. That's for me to look at and try to put right in the next game.

"It's not a strain. I am grateful to be fit and healthy. It's not easy to be healthy at this level with all the games."

  5. Maresca on Semenyo injury, Foden replacing Haaland and 'control'published at 12:40 BST 19 October

    Josh Lobley
    BBC Sport journalist

    Media caption,

Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media before Tuesday's Champions League game against AEK Athens at Etihad Stadium (kick-off 20:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Maresca says that Antoine Semenyo will "probably be out for eight weeks", adding: "At first we expected an even worse injury, but after the scan we feel much better. It is not a muscle problem."

    • On Erling Haaland's fitness: "He can be available but we'll see. We have a session. We had some doubts after the game but he was quite good yesterday [Sunday]. We'll see today."

    • Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O'Reilly are "more or less OK" after coming off against Ipswich.

    • On the prospect of Phil Foden playing in Haaland's absence: "Phil can be one of the solutions, but not the only one. He has played in the past in that position so he can do it again. At the moment, the number nine is Erling."

    • When asked if he wants his team to be "tighter", Maresca said: "How many chances did we concede? I don't remember any clear chances [apart from the goals]. Yes, we conceded, but after that we didn't concede chances. We need to control everything."

    • Maresca said they need to "pay attention" to player workloads, adding: "This is the reason why we needed to make changes against Ipswich and why we need to do some tomorrow. Sometimes things happen that we cannot control [like Semenyo's injury]."

  6. Man City 3-2 Ipswich - the fans' verdictpublished at 09:52 BST 19 October

    Your opinions graphic
    Media caption,

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Manchester City and Ipswich Town.

Here are some of your comments:

    Man City fans

Michael: Unbelievable performance by the players with everything that hangs over their heads. They are not being distracted by everything off the pitch. This will be a very surreal season for every City fan.

Geoff: Marc Guehi is not comfortable in the back line, a great prospect but needs more time and experience to harden up his game. Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandes are great buys, what energy.

Stephen: Another poor defensive display but at least City got the three points. Where did they get the 12 minutes of added time?

Harry: With a B team for most of the game and two mistakes to give away two goals, still winning in those circumstances is fantastic. What isn't fantastic is that our injury list means that our winning streak ends against Aston Villa.

    Ipswich fans

Robert: If we put in those kinds of performances throughout this season, we are going to be OK. Gary O'Neil is savvy enough to keep us up, as shown by the set-up of the team against Man City.

Nick: Not a game we expect to win and to score two goals. The game shows we have come a long way this season. The next two games are vital.

Paul: I was expecting a thrashing but this Ipswich team had other ideas, so I am proud we got two goals. We will survive this season, and we will be a dominant force next season.

Peter: Exceeded expectations. Tireless. Never say die. Totally different from two seasons ago when we lost 10-1 on aggregate over the two league games.

  7. Haaland loves this time of yearpublished at 09:14 BST 19 October

    Chris Collinson
    BBC Sport statistician

    Media caption,

Manchester City were a constant threat against Ipswich, registering 19 shots to their oppositions' eight, with 15 efforts coming from inside the box.

They recorded 40 touches in the opposition box and created six big chances, underlining their attacking dominance.

Erling Haaland was at the heart of it, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring twice, with five shots and seven touches in the opposition box.

Haaland loves when autumn comes as funnily enough his three longest scoring runs for City have all been around this time.

In scoring in his last eight games in all competitions (12 goals) - he is on his third-longest goalscoring run for City.

Data shows Haaland's longest scoring runs for Man City. Currently 8 games. Best is 10 games from 21 August to 22 October in 2022.
  8. Do Manchester City have any grounds to win their appeal?published at 09:02 BST 19 October

Football issues correspondent Dale Johnson byline banner

Manchester City face "substantial hurdles" if they are to have any chance of winning their appeal after being found guilty of breaking the Premier League's financial rules, a leading lawyer has told BBC Sport.

City have been found guilty of all charges related to breaches of the Premier League's financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, and creating "sham contracts" to inflate sponsorship deals by £830m.

The club have said they are "innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League" and they have "irrefutable evidence" the ruling "contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe".

In their appeal, City will argue the payments were made by the United Arab Emirates government as a shareholder of the sponsors, while there are inconsistencies in the Commission's judgement.

Therefore, City say the sponsorship amounts were legitimate and not topped up by the owners.

James Severn, Member of the London Solicitor Litigation Association (LSLA) and Partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper, told BBC Sport the appeal is "not simply an opportunity to invite a new panel" to get the verdict overturned.

"City will need to identify a material error of law, principle or fact, or serious procedural unfairness, which materially affected the Commission's decision," Severn said.

"The Appeal Board nevertheless has broad powers to allow or dismiss the appeal, vary the decision or make any other order it considers appropriate."

  9. City's best start since 1897 - but injuries a concernpublished at 08:38 BST 19 October

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport journalist

Erling Haaland of Manchester City celebrates Image source, Getty Images

Enzo Maresca says he and his players can only focus on matters on the pitch while Manchester City appeal against a verdict that found them guilty of 114 charges related to Premier League financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.

They are continuing to show that focus commendably.

It is the first time in 129 years that City have won their first seven games at the start of a league campaign.

They were in the second tier when they last achieved that - in 1897-98.

It is a remarkable achievement in its context, in the midst of an unprecedented period that has left the club's fate unknown.

Beyond the victory, there were a number of positives for Maresca as his seamless succession of club-great Pep Guardiola continued, including Foden's first league goal since December and the composed midfield performance of teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.

However, it may have come at significant cost. After Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes were both forced off with injury, Erling Haaland and substitute Antoine Semenyo both looked to be hobbling towards the end of the match.

Forced to continue playing after City used all their changes, Haaland, who is up to eight league goals this season, headed straight down the tunnel after picking up his knock.

  10. 'I didn't expect to win seven out of seven'published at 08:27 BST 19 October

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport journalist

    Media caption,

Taking over from Pep Guardiola - 20 trophies during 10 seasons in charge - was always going to be a big challenge for Enzo Maresca.

Seven matches in, City's Premier League record remains flawless.

No points dropped, seven wins out of seven despite falling behind against Bournemouth and playing for more than an hour with 10 men at Manchester United.

"For sure I didn't expect to win seven out of seven," said Maresca. "We are working well and working good.

"I'm very happy especially with the situation in general.

"Today we controlled the game for 95 minutes. We created chances, we scored.

"We finished with a little bit of suffering together but overall, it is good."

On Phil Foden's impressive return to action, Maresca added: "I said since day one that I love Phil. I know him from years ago and I know how good he is.

"It's a matter of helping him to again be one of the best players in the Premier League."

Despite the off-field turmoil, this is City's best start to a league season in 129 years.

Only Chelsea in 2005-06 (first nine) and Liverpool in 2019-20 (first eight) have ever won the first seven matches of a Premier League campaign.

Both went on to win the title.

"First of all, I am very happy because it's a matter of winning games in this business," said Maresca after the game.

"We were able to win seven in a row and what made me very happy was day by day with the players, the way they are working and how I can see them improving.

On his players dealing with the events surrounding the club off the field, Maresca said: "They are not worried about people who judge from outside because they know people are trying to judge them."

  11. Man City 3-2 Ipswich: What Maresca and Foden saidpublished at 17:29 BST 17 October

    Media caption,

Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca, speaking to Match of the Day: "Very happy. Especially with the situation in general. Very happy with today's game. We controlled the game for 95 minutes. We create chances, we score. We finish a little bit suffering together, but overall, it is good."

On Phil Foden's goal: "Happy for Phil. Very happy for Phil. I sense since day one that he is a very important player for us. He's a top player, he just needs to be positive, confident and, for sure, he's going to help the team."

On Aymen Bouaddi: "Not bad, huh? Very good, very good. I thought he was good on the ball, was good off the ball. Again, he's very young. He needs to improve a few things, but he is on the right path."

On Ipswich's late fightback: "Exactly. We finished a little bit suffering, but it's normal. It's a Premier League game."

Manchester City goalscorer Phil Foden speaking to BBC Match of the Day about his goal: "Definitely due one, missed quite a few big chances this season. So good to score today, but the most important thing is to get three points and be in a good position in the league. Massive win."

On Enzo Maresca: "He's settled in really well, the lads are buying into what he wants to do. There's a lot of things to improve still and today is a good example of that. We can do a lot better. Hopefully, we can keep improving and keep getting strong.

"We have to give Ipswich a lot of respect. They played a brilliant game. Good on the ball, aggressive and made it difficult. It's not always going to be pretty, it's just about getting the result, and we did that today, so I'm really happy."

On fans: "You can tell they are behind us and they're pushing us. Nice to play at home. You can hear how loud they are and they're giving us that extra boost that we need."

    Did you know?

    • Manchester City's Phil Foden scored his first Premier League goal since December 2025 (v Crystal Palace), ending his longest ever run without netting in the competition (23 appearances).

    • Erling Haaland has scored in six consecutive Premier League appearances for Manchester City, only once having a longer run in the competition (7 between August and October 2022).
