Stephen remembers New Zealand stay fondly before All Blacks Testpublished at 18:40 GMT 2 November
Image source, SNSSeb Stephen says going to New Zealand as an 18-year-old was the making of him, as he pushes to be included for Scotland against the All Blacks.
Stephen, 21, made his Scotland debut in July's Nations Championship win over Fiji at Murrayfield and was included in head coach Gregor Townsend's squad for this month's tournament matches.
New Zealand visit Murrayfield on Saturday before Australia and Japan take on Townsend's side over the following two weekends.
"Probably the best decision after school was not sticking around in Scotland and doing something completely differing and having that life experience was awesome for me," Stephen told BBC Scotland.
"I had my 18th birthday when I landed out there. I was based in Auckland. I was playing my rugby down in Hamilton. Great experience.
"I was looking to do something completely outwith the norm. That just seemed to be the thing that ticked the box."
Stephen featured for University of Waikato during his 10 months in New Zealand, having been involved in the Scotland under-18s.
Last year, he joined Glasgow Warriors and his form brought him to the attention of Townsend.
"I hadn't been offered any contract and I was just a bit kind of stuck in the Scottish system," he explained. "I didn't really find that I was developing.
"The opportunity to go out and just experience rugby on a completely different level, in terms of the freestyle way of playing, the relaxed nature of the game they have out there and the culture is amazing.
"When I got out there, I felt completely on my own. You kind of get used to it and you kind of find your feet."
