Michael Lee-Chin: On Power and Precision

A mind driven by curiosity—and a certain kind of fear—can engineer a path around virtually any challenge, making the presumed limits to achievement immaterial. That's according to Michael Lee-Chin, one of Canada's best-known billionaires and philanthropists who is investing heavily in cutting-edge energy and medical research. Curiosity is a power as tangible as wealth or fame, says Lee-Chin, but far more agile: It relies on precision to execute plans that answer one of life's biggest questions: "How much can I achieve?"

According to Lee-Chin, curiosity can power exceptional performance, transforming ideas into new industries, even when an innovator begins with little more than an initial "What if?" In Lee-Chin's desire to go beyond what seems possible, he has learned to embrace the idea of the limitless pursuit—a drive to exceed expectations that has defined his life for decades.

Embracing the limitless

"The antidote to complacency is to have excitement and fear in you at the same time,“ Lee-Chin says. ”When you have fear and excitement, you can't be complacent.“

What Lee-Chin speaks of is not a fear of obstacles—he's already accomplished the seemingly impossible by creating billions in business value from his start as a teen cleaning an engine room on a cruise ship. Today, Lee-Chin owns Canada's Portland Holdings and is the majority shareholder in the National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited, the nation's largest bank.

Lee-Chin's fear, he states, is of the stasis of luxury: becoming satisfied with successful businesses, wealth, and having his name on cultural institutions across Canada. For Lee-Chin, the possibilities to transform the shape of one's life are limitless—as is his curiosity to see how far he can go beyond his previous success. That drive is anchored in a singular idea: doing well by doing good. He doesn't mean simply giving money away. Lee Chin's passion is creation – reimagining his previous successes using the same formulas in different, creative ways – all with the purpose of making the world a better place, he says.

Carving a path through the unknown

An engineer who has spent decades investing in innovative companies across multiple industries, Lee-Chin says he is driven to create, test, and build new ideas constantly. Nothing ever feels successful enough. That's because Lee-Chin sees success as a fluid concept: it exists as a state of constant pursuit.

While achievement and wealth may yield power and its accompanying privileges, for Lee-Chin, power is simply another vehicle for exploring new possibilities.

Redefining power as uncompromising choice

Power, according to Lee-Chin, is a trait - an ability to advocate passionately for one's vision and execute it effectively. He sees it as rooted in choice. True power is drawn from the nascent potential of the human will to ignite change and transform one's circumstances, Lee-Chin believes. That's something that Lee-Chin says he felt even as a young boy growing up in Jamaica: a powerful desire to be limitless in his pursuit of new worlds of experience.

Lee-Chin says power is a luxury, but it is also freedom, not merely to do what one wants on a whim but to make significant contributions to society. That belief has inspired his investments in life sciences and nuclear energy, where he sees opportunities to make transformative impacts.

“Power is not just about having influence; it's about using that influence to create positive change," Lee-Chin says. For Lee-Chin, change relies on the discipline to execute strategy with precision.

Transforming dreams into a dynamic strategy

”Curiosity and confidence are the primary ingredients that have always driven me,“ Lee-Chin reflects.

According to Lee-Chin, while his rise started with a dream, a dream without a strategy remains a wish and nothing more. The difference, Lee-Chin says, is the ability to turn dreams into reality through precise execution.

”Visionaries are not just dreamers; they have a strategic plan, an execution plan, and an advocacy plan,“ he notes. ”They are able to foresee trends and prepare for them, ensuring they are always a step ahead.“

For Lee-Chin, part of precision in execution is anticipating challenges and preparing for any eventuality. At the same time, Lee-Chin says immediate decisions must be tied to a clearly articulated plan that is trained on success through foresight.

One of the frameworks that Lee-Chin uses to guide his actions is what he calls the "Three Ps': Predict, Plan, and Persevere." He believes successful people are those who can predict future trends, strategically plan for their prediction, and then steadfastly persevere with their plans despite challenges.

Pursuing a modern definition of philanthropy

Lee-Chin believes industry can be a fulcrum of change – transforming societies and creating new, more efficient ways of making the world a better place. His charitable works aim to empower individuals to take charge of their futures as he did as a boy.

”The ultimate philanthropy is not giving people money, but equipping them to think and be independent,“ he explains. Lee-Chin's support for scholarship programs and investments in infrastructure in needy areas is an expression of his ethos.

During his career, Lee-Chin has channeled millions of dollars into philanthropic endeavors, from educational initiatives at his alma mater and the University of Toronto to medical wings and a school of nursing named after his mother.

One of Lee-Chin's most well-known donations was a $30 million gift to the Royal Ontario Museum, which funded an extension to the largest museum in Canada: the precision-engineered Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. The project was one of the most complicated construction endeavors in North America, per the museum. The structure, which does not have a single right angle, stands as a symbol of Lee-Chin's hope to inspire young Canadians to see their ability to achieve their dreams as limitless, restrained only by their willingness to work relentlessly to pursue them.

An origin story

Born in 1951 in Port Antonio, Jamaica, Michael Lee-Chin attended a local public high school, Titchfield High. In 1970, he immigrated to Canada to study civil engineering at McMaster University. There, he balanced his studies with his job as a bouncer at the local student pub to pay for his education.

As Lee-Chin's mother, Hyacinth, was a bookkeeper who had also sold Avon products door-to-door, Lee-Chin knew the risks and rewards of selling as a profession. Feeling confident in his sales capabilities, he bet on himself, taking a job selling mutual funds after college. His rise through the ranks was brisk. A financial advisor and portfolio manager by 32, Lee-Chin borrowed money to purchase $500k worth of Mackenzie Financial Corporation stock. Four years later, the stock had appreciated sevenfold, enabling him to acquire AIC Limited, a small Ontario-based investment firm, which he grew from less than $1 million to more than $15 billion in assets under management at its peak.

Rethinking the impossible as a strategy

Lee-Chin says his next challenge is "addressing two of humankind's most pressing issues: cancer and clean energy." In the field of oncology, he supports investments focused on targeted radionuclide therapy.

”In oncology, the future lies in targeted radionuclide therapy, which is precision oncology leaving adjacent healthy cells untouched,“ says Lee-Chin. Precision medicine is thought to allow for individualized patient treatments that are highly specific, have better efficacy, and potentially fewer side effects. With this paradigm shift in cancer treatment, patients are expected to have shorter, more efficient journeys, with improved outcomes at a lower cost, Lee-Chin states.

In the energy sector, Lee-Chin champions nuclear energy research and investment, particularly the use of small and micro modular reactors (SMR and MMR) as a "clean and scalable energy solution." Lee-Chin believes that this new energy mix, with nuclear at its center, could eventually address evolving energy requirements and sustainability concerns on a global level.

Driven to Reimagine the Future

Michael Lee-Chin aims for his contributions to continue to drive positive change and inspire others to pursue their visions with power and precision. Lee-Chin's mantra of "prosperitas cum caritate" encapsulates his approach to both business and life. ”Prosperity with care means achieving success while ensuring that you are making a positive impact on those around you,“ he explains. ”It's about being mindful of the broader implications of your actions and striving to uplift others as you succeed.“

Lee-Chin says that drive is the same passion he felt as a young man, dreaming of a world beyond his humble beginning. ”Every day, I'm excited,“ says Lee-Chin. ”I (like to) think of myself as always in 'rhino mode'—thick-skinned, head down, moving forward regardless of obstacles.“
