Can Somerset claim a first ever County Championship title?

What a return for the County Championship with not one of the nine matches in Division One or Two ending in a draw. Are we entertained? You'd better believe it!

So it's as you were at the top with wins for the top three and sixth-placed Yorkshire. With five rounds to go and only 28 points covering the top seven, every point from here is going to count.

The battle for survival is poised to go to the wire and the battle for promotion from Division Two is currently being aced by Durham, but Kent and Northants are not going away.

So pause friends, take a deep breath, clean out your Tupperware sandwich boxes in good time because the whole thing cranks into action again when another nine matches go to post on Thursday.

If this weekend is anything to go by, it is going to be fun and we will, as always, be with you every step of the way.

Thanks for being with us over the last four days and join us on Thursday from 10:30 BST.

We do not have long to wait until we go again in the Championship, with every team's 10th game of the season beginning on Thursday, including a very tasty-looking title clash at Edgbaston between Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire, third versus first.

    Division One:

    Chelmsford: Essex v Surrey

    Cardiff: Glamorgan v Hampshire

    Hove: Sussex v Somerset

    Edgbaston: Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire

    Scarborough: Yorkshire v Leicestershire

    Division Two:

    Derby: Derbyshire v Middlesex

    Chester-le-Street: Durham v Gloucestershire

    Northampton: Northamptonshire v Kent

    Worcester: Worcestershire v Lancashire

  3. Durham plus one for promotion?published at 18:16 BST 23 August

    County Championship Division Two table

With Worcestershire's successful run chase completed, we now know the make up of Division Two at the end of this round of games.

Durham remain well clear at the top after thumping Derbyshire by 338 runs and with Ben Stokes now added to a side that already included Alex Lees, David Bedingham, Matthew Potts and others, it is hard to imagine them not finishing top and securing an immediate return to the top flight.

Behind them, Kent and Northants both won, but with the men of Kent collecting two extra batting points, their lead is now four ahead of their meeting in Northampton, which begins on Thursday. The outcome of that could have a big bearing on who gets promoted.

Worcestershire's successful run chase this afternoon keeps them interested if they can put a run together in the closing weeks, but Derbyshire and Middlesex's hopes took a knock after defeats.

Their meeting in Derby could be a last-chance saloon for both sides' attempts to get into the promotion reckoning.

While the misery goes on for Lancashire and Gloucestershire. The Red Rose are on course for the lowest-ever finish in their proud history and the Glosters' eighth loss out of nine keeps them miles adrift at the bottom.

    Glos 150 & 395-7 dec v Worcs 267 & 281-2

A remarkable run chase by Worcestershire.

From a distance, it might have looked like a generous declaration by Cameron Bancroft shortly after James Bracey was out for 127.

But observers at the ground were convinced that 279 in 60 overs would be a tough chase for Worcestershire on a turning pitch at Cheltenham.

But they made easy work of it with Dan Lategan and Jake Libby sharing a remarkable opening stand of 244.

Lategan entertained in reaching 144, his maiden first-class century, and Libby produced a masterclass in pacing the innings to finish unbeaten on 107.

Adam Hose hit the winning runs to lift Worcestershire up to fourth in the Division Two table.

They get 20 points, Gloucestershire 3.

Much mirth at Cheltenham as Beyers Swanepoel hits a six to get Worcestershire to within two of a victory and then slams one down the ground only for Ed Middleton to somehow hold on to the caught and bowled.

    Glos v Worcs 266-1 - target 279

Worcestershire's overseas bowler Beyers Swanepoel raised a few eyebrows at the end of day three when he told reporters he would bat at number three in the second innings and his team would chase down whatever they're set.

It looks like he was right. He has come in at number three and Worcestershire need just 13 more to win.

Swanepoel has actually been a little disappointingly restrained, content to keep the score ticking over to what is now surely an inevitable conclusion.

Dan Lategan will have been pleased to have Jake Libby at the other end while he scored his maiden first class century.

He sees his experienced team-mate as something of a mentor.

But now it's Libby's moment, his 22nd first-class hundred in his 13-year career is brought up by running one down to third for his 12th four.

The century comes off 136 balls.

Olly Stone took 10 wickets in the match against Surrey

Olly Stone (Notts): He might argue with coach Peter Moores after the latter insisted his seamer will "not bowl better" given there is plenty of life left in the season but it was hard to argue in principle.

The Notts quick led the attack in both first and second innings in their 145 run win over Surrey taking 6-44 and 4-50 (his best remains 11-96) and he is surely pushing for a winter with England.

Dom Bess (Yorkshire): He did more work than any of the Yorks bowlers and stood in as captain for the injured Jonny Bairstow as the White Rose gained a vital relegation scrap win against Hants.

He hit 63 with the bat in two innings and bowled 46 overs in the second for his 5-103 - a first five-for of the campaign.

Jack Leach (Somerset): A second off-spinner for the TOTW, Leach spun his side to victory and it was a case of quality and quantity for the bespectacled one. After 4-37 in the first innings, Leach as good as filleted Essex's middle, removing all the batters from three to seven inclusive for his 5-81 off 55.2 overs in the second.

Ian Holland (Leicestershire): Last, but by no means least, step forward the Leics skipper whose nine-wicket haul in the Foxes' victory over Glam delivered superb figures of 24-12-19-5 on day four to seal a 42-run win.

It's easy to forget that Dan Lategan was dropped off a sharp chance at short-leg first ball.

    He's on 134, Worcestershire need 48 more.

Finlay Bean (Yorkshire): With the wicketkeeper standing up even to the seamers, including George Hill with the new ball, the performance of Bean in the win over Hampshire deserves special mention.

The opener has kept for his county in white-ball action but is by no means a regular with the gloves yet was parachuted in when Jonny Bairstow injured a hand - yes, standing up to the stumps for a seamer.

No catches or runs (obviously) for Bean, but a tidy display in difficult circumstances on a spin-friendly turning pitch and a win just edge it his way.

On another day he might have had an assist, too, when an edge off Andrew Neal's bat from the bowling of Dom Bess popped up off his boot to slip, only for the umpires to miss it.

    Jack LeachImage source, Getty Images

England spinner Jack Leach says he is still not bowling at his best despite taking nine wickets to help Somerset beat Essex by eight wickets at Taunton.

Leach has 22 from eight games so far this season - 11 fewer than paceman Craig Overton, the club's leading wicket-taker, who missed the Essex game after the birth of a daughter.

"It has not been an easy season for me and I still don’t think I am bowling at my best. But hopefully that will come over the last five games," Leach said.

"In the end, the team performance is what matters most and we can take a lot of confidence from beating a really good side.

“The Championship race is wide open and there is a lot of excitement in the dressing room because we know what winning a first-ever title would mean to us and our supporters. We are right in there with a chance."

Ben Stokes leaning back with his head looking upwards after taking a wicket for DurhamImage source, Getty Images

Ben Stokes (Durham): Hopefully not too many arguments about this selection!

In his first red-ball match since stepping away from the England captaincy and Test cricket, Stokes produced a demonstration of why he has been one of the best players in world cricket for over a decade.

Two hard-hitting knocks with the bat in 53 and 66 not out and seven wickets with the ball, including a wicket with his first ball in Derbyshire's first and second innings and three in four balls in that second.

His spell of 5-17 on Saturday evening in 7.3 overs was gripping stuff very rarely seen in Division Two.

England's loss will be Durham and the County Championship's gain on this evidence in the next few weeks.

This brilliant partnership between Dan Lategan and Jake Libby goes on and Worcestershire are just 78 away as we enter the final hour and last 16 overs.

Lategan will get the headlines but it's been an impressive effort from Libby who has brought his One-Day Cup form into the game.

He's shown his leadership in the way he's mentored his young partner to a maiden first-class century.

Sam Northeast (Kent): In an excellent game at Northwood, Northeast's 87 on day one turned out to be the highest score of the match against Middlesex.

The 81 of Zak Crawley was more eye-catching, but their partnership of 142 for the second wicket was the bedrock of Kent's first innings 350, which put them ahead of their eight-ball, a position that was never really relinquished.

Vansh Jani (Warwickshire): Jani shone in the One-Day Cup with four fifties in eight games and he brought that form into his first Championship game of the season, and only his second overall.

Coming in at 42-3 in that tense chase with Sussex, he put on 107 with Dan Mousley as Warwickshire broke the back of that 207. Jani went for 62 as the Bears stumbled over the line by one wicket, but the 22-year-old's contribution was vital.

George Bartlett (Northants): While there was an absolute chasm between Lancashire and Northants over the last two days, things were more in the balance on Friday.

At 92-5 and 134-6, Northants were in trouble, but coming in at number seven, Bartlett's 92 took them to 284, a score which felt well over par at the time and played out in exactly that way.

Dan Lategan made a name for himself in last summer's One Day Cup, playing a big part in Worcestershire lifting the trophy.

Now he's doing it in the championship. After three 50s he has his maiden first class century.

He gets there with a pulled shot for his 12th four to go with three sixes. It's taken him 132 deliveries so he slowed down for his last 20 runs or so but Jake Libby, with all his experience has guided him through it. A big moment in the life of the 20 year old.
