This SA batting line up should hold no fear for England in the winter.

I would say it's been a good fightback, but not sure they're on top...don't fancy their batting at all!

This is dreadful batting, all six wickets have been absolute gifts.

You can say many things about this Australia team but they do know how to find something when they really, really need it? Remember the noise after the first couple of innings of the Ashes? They won in Perth and won the series 4-1.

Today, when their captain has needed rescuing from his hole, they have done it, albeit with a big helping hand from South Africa.

New batter Marco Jansen ducks under the bouncer that concludes Mitchell Starc's double wicket maiden.

There are some angry-looking South Africa fans in the crowd.

    Mulder c Carey b Starc 0 (SA 232-6)

Can you believe it? It's two in three balls for Mitchell Starc and Australia as Wiaan Mulder goes after a pull shot and gets a thin edge through to the keeper.

If Australia weren't already on top, they certainly are now.

  9. Postpublished at 13:52 GMT 27 October

South Africa were 203-1. Wiaan Mulder now emerges at 232-5.

After their horror morning, Australia may now be on top.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 56.2 overs

    Bedingham c Hazlewood b Starc 50 (SA 232-5)

South Africa have given another wicket away!

With the field set David Bedingham top-edges a pull shot off Mitchell Starc to fine leg.

It's Josh Hazlewood down there and he takes a very good catch, hopping either side of the boundary rope to keep the ball in play.

50 for David Bedinghampublished at 56 overs

Cooper Connolly, little more than a part-time spinner, turns the ball past the edge of David Bedingham. Marnus Labuschagne is appealing for... something.

Bedingham survives to reach fifty later in the over, meanwhile Matt Renshaw has to throw the ball in from the deep with his trousers around his thighs after a sliding stop.

Important runs from South Africa's number three.

If you look at the Australia team that came out for lunch versus the Australia team that came out for tea, it is a completely different scenario.

Amazing how quickly we write teams off in Test cricket. There’s usually another twist coming just when everyone thinks they’ve worked out where the game is heading.

Sometimes the most interesting thing about cricket is how quickly the mood can change. One good partnership or one good spell and suddenly the whole game looks completely different. Plenty left in this yet.

  18. Australia fight back after South Africa's strong startpublished at 13:24 GMT 27 October

It has been a thrilling first two sessions as Newlands.

After Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl, South Africa's opening batters Aiden Markram (78) and Marques Ackerman (95) put on 158 for the opening wicket.

The hosts were then 203-1 when Mitchell Starc caught Markram off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.

From there, it has been a mini-collapse from South Africa who are 221-4 at tea after Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke were dismissed for zero and two respectively.

We will take a brief break here and will be back for the start of the evening session.

Three singles in that over take South Africa to 221-4 - David Bedingham will return from the break on 41 not out with a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

South Africa were 203-1 and quickly fell to 216-4.
