  1. SA 182-1published at 37 overs

    Markram 70, Bedingham 14

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma will be given a luxury when he comes into bat next at some point today.

At Gqeberha, he went out to the middle at 12-2 prior to producing his best ever Test knock of 179.

In the first Test, was in at 84-2 and 73-2, so he's going to get the best part of 100 runs on top of that as a bare minimum.

Five singles and start the over before Mitchell Starc produces a no ball.

The extra delivery is punished for four by David Bedingham, a 10-run over for the hosts.

  2. SA 172-1published at 36 overs

    Markram 67, Bedingham 8

David Bedingham has not been as free-scoring as Marques Ackerman was, but his two scoring shots have been excellent.

His latest four is a straight punch past the feet of Josh Hazlewood, running away to the rope.

  3. SA 167-1published at 35 overs

Just one more single added to the total.

A penny for the thoughts of Marques Ackerman, who probably feels he's missed out on a Test century. Especially given the nature of his dismissal.

  4. SA 166-1published at 34.1 overs

    Markram 65, Bedingham 4

Aiden Markram follows up David Bedingham's effort with a driven off-side four of his own.

He didn't really time that as well as he would have hoped, but cashes in all the same off Mitchell Starc's delivery.

  5. SA 162-1published at 34 overs

    Markram 61, Bedingham 4

David Bedingham breaks a run of 12 dot balls with an excellent punched drive through extra cover.

It gets him off the mark and adds four to the total.

  6. SA 158-1published at 33 overs

A tidy maiden from Pat Cummins and eight dots since that wicket - Australia are wresting back some momentum.

Josh Hazlewood will return in place of wicket-taker Nathan Lyon.

  7. SA 158-1published at 32 overs

David Bedingham is the new man in the middle with Aiden Markram.

That was the second-highest opening partnership against Australia when they have sent a team in to bat.

The umpires review what seemed to be a rather chance appeal for a stumping against Bedingham.

He looked well in his crease and the replays support that, much to Marnus Labuschagne's dismay.

Ackerman st Carey b Lyon 95 (SA 158-1)

Marques Ackerman misses out on a century!

Shorter and a bit wider from Nathan Lyon, it sets the trap for Ackerman who comes dancing down the wicket but misses completely.

Alex Carey is waiting for the ball and takes a very routine stumping to remove the dangerous Ackerman.

Australia finally get the break through, ending an excellent knock from Ackerman in just his second Test innings.

  9. SA 157-0published at 31 overs

    Markram 60, Ackerman 95

Six from Pat Cummins' latest over as Australia continue to toil for a wicket.

Nathan Lyon remains alongside his captain in the attack.

  10. SA 157-0published at 30.5 overs

    Markram 60, Ackerman 95

Four more from Marques Ackerman takes him to 95.

It was short and wide and Pat Cummins and a wild hack from Ackerman, who gets the finest of nicks on the ball to send it trickling to the leg side boundary.

  11. SA 151-0published at 30 overs

    Markram 59, Ackerman 90

In the 30th over of the day, South Africa reach an opening partnership that passes 150.

The last time South Africa did that was nine years ago against Bangladesh. Aiden Markram was also involved, batting alongside Dean Elgar.

  12. SA 148-0published at 29 overs

    Markram 58, Ackerman 88

The average score at Cape Town for day one of a Test is 269-7.

Given that, in theory, we're just shy of a third of the way through the day, South Africa could race past that total in the next two sessions.

  13. SA 144-0published at 28 overs

A good battle between bat and ball, but South Africa remain intact.

    Four runs from the over.

Australia captain Pat Cummins joins Nathan Lyon in the attack from the Kelvin Grove end.

  14. SA 142-0published at 27.2 overs

    Markram 56, Ackerman 84

    Almost an early breakthrough!

Marques Ackerman goes full attack at that ball and fires back at Nathan Lyon.

Lyon gets a hand to it, but it was a tough chance.

The ball rebounds and rolls towards the boundary rope, but an acrobatic effort from Josh Hazlewood saves a couple.

  15. SA 140-0published at 27.1 overs

    Markram 56, Ackerman 82

Nathan Lyon bowls the first ball of this afternoon session.

    Marques Ackerman blocks it.

  16. Welcome backpublished at 11:10 GMT 27 October

Hello and welcome back to our live text of day one from the third Test between South Africa and Australia at Newlands.

Both teams are set to return to the field imminently.

A reminder, South Africa are 140-0 following that dominant first session for the hosts.

    SA 140-0

In case you are just joining us, here is what you have missed so far as we reach lunch.

Australia, without Steve Smith, won the toss and opted to bowl first in glorious sunshine at Newlands.

So far at least, that decision has proved costly. South Africa openers Aidan Markram (56*) and Marques Ackerman (82*) have both made half centuries in the first session and Australia have done very little in their attempts to take a wicket.

Australia's only big chance came when Markram picked out Travis Head, who somehow dropped Markram on 39 when it seemed easier to take the catch.

We will return for the second session on this live text at around 11:10 GMT. While we're gone, we'll leave you with this.

The question was asked about SA after the first Test, rusty or something else? I think we know the answer now. I fear for England.

    Lunchpublished at 27 overs

    SA 140-0

The first real edge from either batter comes off the final delivery of the session.

Aidan Markram squeezes the ball through the vacant gap at third slip to add an unconvincing four. But given how he has batted so far, it is one he can be afforded.

South Africa reach lunch at 140-0.

  20. SA 136-0published at 26.3 overs

    Markram 52, Ackerman 82

A reminder, Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl first.

The weather at Newlands has been nothing short of glorious throughout this session and South Africa's opening batters have taken full advantage.
