This next hour for Pakistan is very important for the outcome of this Test match.

They don't want Joe Root to still be stood there tomorrow.

  2. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 55-2published at 12 overs

Mohammad Ali concedes a single, much improved from leaking three boundaries in his opening four deliveries of the match.

Pakistan will be the happier of the two sides at drinks. Their tails are up after picking up two wickets in eight balls to account for England's openers.

    Jordan Cox has 6 (11), Joe Root 1 (2).

Does anybody think Gay is a Test-match level batsman? He is clearly no improvement on Crawley.

    Nicholas H, Cheltenham

  5. Eng 54-2published at 11 overs

For five deliveries, dots alternate with scoring shots. Jordan Cox gets off the mark with a boundary through the covers and later picks up two - there's a bit of indecision between him and Joe Root about whether to go for a three and they wisely opt not to.

Muhammad Abbas and Cox combine to ruin the pattern. The final ball is a dot.

Big, big technical flaw for Gay, the theme of his international career so far. He looks promising but needs to find a fix if he’s going to last and succeed at this level.

Back of the length, half a yard shorter. It was a nothing ball really, nothing shot from Emilio Gay.

That's why as a bowler, you've just got to keep on going, you've just got to keep on bowling. England lose two quick wickets.

Ah. Mohammad Ali finally finds a good delivery, angling across Emilio Gay, and is rewarded with an outside edge. Stand-in skipper Salman Agha pouches the catch in the slips.

Emilio Gay departs for 33 (31).

    Here comes Joe Root.

  10. Eng 48-1published at 9.4 overs

Mohammad Ali enters the attack and concedes three boundaries in four deliveries. He's either too wide or too full and Emilio Gay says thank you very much.

His cover drive is a joy to watch.

Pakistan needed something to give them life.

It was great skill from Muhammad Abbas.

  12. Eng 36-1published at 9 overs

Muhammad Abbas gets some movement off the surface and beats Jordan Cox's bat to complete a wicket maiden. How Pakistan would love another couple of wickets tonight.

There appeared to be a few words between batter and fielders there as the replay was shown. Ben Duckett looked back towards the Pakistan players with a long glare.

Struck in the shin and smacking into Ben Duckett's middle stump. A grim review.

Muhammad Abbas has the first wicket of England's innings.

  18. England reviewpublished at 8.5 overs

This time it's given out! Muhammad Abbas has Ben Duckett lbw on the field.

Duckett has a lengthy chat with Emilio Gay and then goes for a slightly bashful review.

  19. Postpublished at 18:11 BST 19 August

    Sir Alastair Cook
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Emilio Gay has been really committed to his attacking shots and being decisive.

I'm not sure it's the best plan to bowl at him around the wicket.

  20. Eng 36-0published at 8 overs

Emilio Gay, driving, four. He defends the next five deliveries nicely, unruffled by Khurram Shahzad's wide or bouncing offerings.
