Delap double inspires Forest to stunning win over Manchester City

Liam Delap scored two superb goals as Nottingham Forest earned their first home Premier League win of the season with a pugnacious victory over a slipshod Manchester City.

Jair Cunha and Delap had given Forest a two-goal lead at half-time - both courtesy of rudimentary City errors - before Rayan Cherki pulled one back with a stunning half-volley.

City appeared to have the momentum but Forest remained dangerous on the counter-attack and Delap produced a spectacular finish to stymie any hopes of a comeback.

The result left City six points behind table-topping Arsenal - 1-0 winners over Hull earlier in the day - in second place, while Forest are now two points above the relegation zone in 16th. It also pushed Manchester United into the relegation zone for the first time at this stage of a Premier League season.

Forest had taken an early lead when Josko Gvardiol was punished for a slightly heavy touch before being bundled off the ball far too easily by Cunha.

The Brazilian advanced towards the edge of the box before stroking a low effort into the corner of the net from just inside the area.

The intensity of Oliver Glasner's side brought them a second goal when Xaver Schlager's tenacity allowed him to win a 50/50 challenge against a timid Elliot Anderson.

Schlager released Delap, who powered his way from the halfway line - unchallenged - before lashing a powerful finish beyond a hapless Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City had their moments during a frenetic first period - Erling Haaland's shot from a tight angle was cleared off the line while Enzo Fernandez should have done better with a header.

The visitors reduced the arrears early in the second half when Cherki gracefully met a clearance with a crisp half-volley.

City then camped in Forest's half but Delap applied the coup de grace when he finished off a swift breakaway, spearheaded by Morgan Gibbs-White, with a rasping, curling finish high into the corner of the net.

Forest analysis: Delap delivers at the double

Players and fans deserved this win - Glasner

A spring-heeled Glasner danced a merry jig, hoisting his fists in the air like a giddy dad on sports day at their child's school, when Delap popped in Forest's second goal.

He went full Jose Mourinho, sprinting down the touchline to join his players when Delap nearly burst the net with the third.

These were the England striker's first goals at the City Ground, and will have tasted particularly sweet for manager and player alike.

Delap spent a decade in City's youth ranks before departing for Ipswich in 2019 - another product of City's conveyor belt who was not quite considered ready for the top shelf.

His goalscoring prowess in East Anglia earned him a move to Chelsea but his career stalled at Stamford Bridge after paltry returns.

After a slow start at the City Ground - one goal in his first eight appearances - he delivered a reminder of his qualities with a pulsating display.

Chest puffed out and shoulders back, he ran at City's backline with bustle and an intent to bully.

Forest have looked the part under former Crystal Palace boss Glasner, but that has not quite translated into results.

The Austrian will be eager for this to be the catalyst. Delap will be hoping likewise.

City analysis: Sloppiness costs Maresca's side

Manchester City 'not happy but no panic' - Maresca

In the fog that drifted over the City Ground, Enzo Maresca's side were all at sea as they slid to their third league defeat in as many games.

Forest had bottle and bite right from kick-off while City were brittle and bumbling.

City have now conceded eight first-half goals in 10 games, with only Crystal Palace (11) and Ipswich (nine) conceding more in the league this season.

The scrutiny on City goalkeeper Donnarumma, who has suffered a dip in form in recent weeks, will inevitably increase.

A well-placed totem pole might have been more effective than the Italian for Forest's first two goals.

On both occasions the 27-year-old's positioning and reaction times were questionable.

He was not helped by those in front of him, as decidedly meek play from Anderson and Gvardiol led to Forest's opening two goals.

Indeed, only Sunderland (six) and Hull City (five) have committed more errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season than City's four.

There was little Donnarumma could do about the quality of Delap's finish for the third.

Maresca needs to eradicate such sloppiness if City are to keep pace with a ruthless Arsenal side deep into the season.

At the moment it looks unlikely.
