On whether Michael Carrick had to start Lisandro Martinez due to lack of options:

Matthijs de Ligt is on the bench, Noussair Mazraoui is on the bench. If you want to find another option then there are options.

I understand that Man Utd need to find a win today because otherwise the crisis is going to deepen if they don't win anything.

If they don't even get a point and they go to Como on Wednesday in the Champions League that could be two more defeats and then things look very different.

Michael Carrick said he didn't need points but you do need points. Everybody needs points.

Sunderland striker Timur Tutierov is set to make his first Premier League start after his competitive debut for the club against Torreense in the Europa League mid-week.

The 21-year-old Ukrainian spoke to BBC Radio Newcastle on Thursday: “It’s unbelievable. It just shows when you dream, there is something to come true, you know? It’s a very big moment for my family, for myself and I really appreciate the boys who helped me, the gaffer who trusts me. It’s a very big step in my career.”

On Lisandro Martinez's comments about the club's hierarchy:

It's just heightened the views on the Man Utd training ground and performances. I personally think he's not having a go at the manager. I think everybody's on board with Michael Carrick. We don't know what's going on at the training ground.

I think what he said, I don't think many people think he's wrong, but you don't come out and say it as a player. You talk to the players in the dressing room, on the training ground, you speak to the manager and do it internally.

If you're not happy in the dressing room, air your views then. That's what makes you a proper man - that you address the situation and the people you're talking about in the eye.

You don't break that code.

Michael Carrick is backing Marcus Rashford to rediscover his scoring touch at Manchester United.

Rashford has returned to the Old Trafford outfit this season after loan stints with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Although the England forward has shown flashes of good form, he is still to score or create a goal this season, and some observers are wondering whether his presence has altered the dynamic in Carrick’s squad.

Sources dispute this and say Rashford’s performance is being hampered by ongoing treatment for an injury he initially sustained during the World Cup and which forced him to pull out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for England’s recent Nations League games.

Rashford has been in every United matchday squad so far this season and started his sixth game of the campaign against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

And Carrick still has faith in the 28-year-old.

“Marcus has done a lot of good things,” said Carrick. “He obviously had a slight injury when he pulled out of England. We had to manage that a little bit.

“He’s not quite getting that little bit of a break. But he is putting himself in good positions and having some opportunities.

“If he keeps doing the right things, he will get the rewards in the end.”

Leeds defender Nico Elvedi, a summer signing from Borussia Monchengladbach, is preparing for his first meeting with the club's rivals Manchester United.

The Switzerland international told BBC Radio Leeds he does not need "extra motivation", adding that his experience of facing Monchengladbach's rivals Cologne will have similarities.

"It was also a very big rivalry. For the fans it was the most important game of the year and everyone wanted to win that. I think it's similar to this game at the weekend," he said.

When Brighton lost at home to Crystal Palace in February, Fabian Hurzeler was booed by his own supporters and subjected to chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning".

"There are only two options," said the German after the 1-0 defeat by their fierce rivals left his team floundering 14th in the table with one win in 12 Premier League matches.

"Give up or keep pushing harder, and that's always the option I choose in my life."

Eight months on, Brighton are reaping the benefits of keeping faith with the man who became the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history when he was appointed in June 2024 at the age of 31.

"You learn more about yourself and the people around you when you are losing games," former Brighton striker Glenn Murray told BBC Sport.

"Hurzeler has come out the other side and the way he has got this group of players performing is exceptional."

There is simply no stopping Brighton right now. Thursday's 4-0 win over Lithuanian side Kauno Zalgiris was their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions, with the Seagulls scoring 17 goals and conceding just two during that run.

Not even a controversial red card for defender Pascal Struijk, subsequently rescinded, could derail them at Sunderland last weekend.

Albion played the final half-hour on Wearside with 10 men but still secured a 2-0 victory, sealed by Jaouen Hadjam's stoppage-time strike.

They are now on the cusp of equalling a club record by winning four consecutive Premier League games and can do so without conceding a goal for the first time.

Third-placed Brighton have made a habit of starting strongly in recent years. This is the fourth time in six seasons they have collected at least 13 points at this stage of a campaign, with only Arsenal and Manchester City having done so more often.

The challenge for boss Fabian Hurzeler is to maintain that momentum while managing the additional demands of the Conference League. It may help that opponents Crystal Palace were also in European action on Thursday and, unlike the Seagulls, played away.

Squad depth could prove crucial in the coming months, and Jack Hinshelwood's midweek return from injury, coupled with Georginio Rutter's brace, provided an encouraging reminder of the resources at Hurzeler's disposal.

The general consensus was that Manchester United looked like a more solid team in Madrid on Tuesday, despite their 2-0 defeat to Atletico.

It is no surprise therefore that the midfield pairing of Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba is retained, with Amad returning and Marcus Rashford dropping to the bench alongside Matheus Cunha.

Lisandro Martinez's apology was enough to allow him to keep his place in a defence that is set to feature Leny Yoro at right-back and Diogo Dalot on the left.

Luke Shaw misses out completely, further highlighting the controversy around United opting not to bring in reinforcements at left-back in the summer.

The headline news from Elland Road is that defender Lisandro Martinez starts for Manchester United following his controversial remarks criticising the club's hierarchy in midweek.

Leeds United are unchanged after their narrow loss to champions Arsenal last weekend.

Leeds XI: Trafford, Bogle, Justin, Elvedi, Muharemovic, Gudmundsson, Ampadu, Tanaka, Stach, Okafor, Calvert-Lewin.

Subs: Zetterer, Longstaff, Wilson, Aaronson, Nmecha, Bijol, Bahoya, Bard, Gruev.

There are three changes for Manchester United from their previous Premier League outing, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

Summer signings Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos, and defender Diogo Dalot, all keep their places after starting in the Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid in midweek.

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are absent with injury, while Mateus Cunha drops to the bench, where he is joined by Marcus Rashford.

Man Utd XI: Lammens, Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Yoro, Diallo, Tielemans, Santos, Baleba, Fernandes, Mbeumo.

Subs: Darlow, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Mount, Rashford, Cunha, Zirkzee, Lacey, Amass.

Fabian Hurzeler makes seven changes to the Brighton side that thrashed Lithuanian team Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 in the Conference League on Thursday.

The only four to remain are goalkeeper Vart Verbruggen, defenders Olivier Boscagli and Lewis Dunk and in-form midfielder Pascal Gross.

Brighton XI: Verbruggen, Boscagli, Vuskovic, Dunk, Kadioglu, Gross, Andres, De Cuyper, Ayari, Gomez, Kostoulas.

Subs: Steele, Hadjam, Svobada, Hinshelwood, Yalcouye, Costinha, O'Riley, Osman, Rutter.

Three changes for Crystal Palace from the 11 that began the 3-2 away Europa League loss at Lyon. Honest Ahanor, Daichi Kamada and Anan Khalaili start, with Oscar Mingueza and Ismaila Sarr dropping to the bench, while Axel Disasi is not in the squad.

Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is among the substitutes having been out with a hamstring injury for almost two months.

Crystal Palace XI: Benitez, Canvot, Ahanor, Richards, Mitchell, Timber, Wharton, Kamada, Khalaili, Pino, Strand Larsen.

Subs: Matthews, Mingueza, Osorio, Lerma, Hughes, McNeil, Sarr, Nketiah, Mateta.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick says a sense of perspective needs to be kept over the club’s current run of poor form.

United have only won two of their nine games this season.

If they fail to beat old rivals Leeds at Elland Road, they will have gone six games without a win in all competitions for the first time since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ended the 2018-19 campaign badly after the Norwegian was appointed on a permanent basis.

However, Carrick doesn’t see the situation in quite such bleak terms.

He feels the Manchester United squad are not too far away from getting the results they expect.

“Perpsective is important,” he said. “Football can change. When we came in in January, we were a lot further away from third spot than we are now and we ended up finishing third.

“It depends what you focus on. If you focus on some things, maybe there are issues that we need to fix. Or do you focus on the things that are possible and what can be achieved? That is a very different mentality.

“The goal at this football club is always to win. There's no time frame on that from my perspective.

“We’re trying to build to get to somewhere we haven't been for too long. Sometimes you've got to go through different pathways to get to the top.”

We will bring you the line-ups for the early games soon but I can tell you Lisandro Martinez starts for Manchester United - and there is a Premier League debut for Sunderland's Tymur Tutierov.
