It was [a mental test]. It was a real slow start and they conceded the goal so early on. You could see the intent from Manchester United going from man to man, but it was unlucky from Baleba [who lost the ball].

Dalot has got to stay with the runner, and then there is not much more United could have done. Heaven does the right thing by coming across, and then the spare man at the edge of the box puts in a good finish.

I think the intent was there, but when you start a game you have got to be switched on from that first minute, and Dalot let's his runner run in behind him and it's cost Man United.

Manchester United

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez, speaking to Amazon Prime on the performance: "Really poor. Really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.

"We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well. Atletico have an amazing team and they deserve to win today.

"I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]. I have to be honest, as players we have to do more but it is also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night."

Which areas should have been strengthened? "In general. Last season we did everything, we created the base to create an amazing team.

"It is annoying, disappointing coming here and I am not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result here."

Manager gets criticism, is the problem the manager was not backed enough? "I don't think so. He does his best. Every season is different. You can't stay with what you did last season. The teams knows how you play, they know every detail, if you don't change next season is a big problem."

"You can't keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas? I can't say more.

"Tonight it is easy to say the coach, easy to say the players but also we have to see other areas."

A lack of goals and an inability to keep clean sheets - it's not a good recipe at the moment for Manchester United.

Their fixtures don't get any easier. Leeds United will be absolutely licking their lips at a wounded Manchester United coming to Elland Road at the weekend.

Martin Odegaard is a technical leader.

I don't think that he's the most vocal, but he leads in a different way with his quality, with his vision, and he gives this group of players something different.

When they can't open the door and they are playing against these diligent defensive shapes he's that one with a vibe of magic, who can find the space and open the door.

Arsenal

Arsenal full-back Jurrien Timber speaking to TNT Sports about his goal:

"I had some moments in the first half but second half I had more. First touch was good, which was half the job, and then Noni [Madueke] was screaming "shoot" so I thought OK I have to shoot. And then yeah it went in nice.

"I wasn't thinking too much. I saw the goal and thought I need to shoot. We needed that first goal, we were playing well just needed the goal. Happy to get that for the team."

On team performance: "We have confidence in ourselves, we know how good we are. First half we had some moments where we were sloppy. But we were always in control and we needed that first goal but the way we came out the second half showed character and the guys that came in did an amazing job. We need to keep going.

"These are the demands. We played three days ago, today again. We need everyone, all the players. Injuries are part of the season so we need other players to step up. We need to keep going, keep improving and another tough match on Sunday."

[Carrick] needs a result. I don't care who or what you are, what the size of the club is or how much has been spent. What it all boils down to is attitude. It's results. And at the moment they haven't been good enough.

I said before the game, and during, that they need to stick with him. They can't keep thinking, I'll get ride of another manager, bring another one in. It doesn't work like that.

It has been a decent enough performance but as soon as Manchester United went down to 10 men it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

It's a difficult place to come and that made their task 10 times harder.

It'll be interesting to hear what Michael Carrick has got to say. I don't think he'll be overly down and disappointed with the way that his side has played.

Nice scenes at full-time at the Emirates as Olivier Giroud embraces his former team-mate Mikel Arteta before applauding the home fans.

Crazy to think Arteta is just four years older than Giroud.

Bang average first half, but real real quality in the second, making them comfortable winners with a clean sheet.

All over and it is defeat for the 10 men of Manchester United.

A better performance from the weekend but it is nine games played this season and just two wins.

Matheus Cunha sees a late effort well saved by Jan Oblak as Manchester United try to get something.

Well Arsenal took 64 minutes to find the opener but once they did the floodgates were open.

A comfortable win for Mikel Arteta's side.

SCENES!

From 2-0 up, to 3-2 down, to 3-3. What a game this has been and it looks like Viking are going to take points off Bayern Munich.

In the 90th minute, Herman Haugen gets up at the back post to get his head on it and send the home fans crazy.

Arsenal continue to probe for a fourth, they want the icing on the cake, but there's no one there to get on the end of Declan Rice's pass.

Kai Havertz goes into the referee's book for stepping in on goalkeeper Berke Ozer.

Only around half of the 3400 travelling United fans are in the stadium now.

Into the final couple of minutes of this match. Atletico Madrid will take the win but there has been some positives for Manchester United. They've not played too badly, just not taken their chances.

I love how Mikel Arteta has put Max Dowman right into his favourite position. The experience is now more important for Dowman than keeping Saka in that position.
