Are Ferrari going to continue with this FP1 to Q2 fastest then vanish in Q3? It seems others have a further engine setting if so!

Lando Norris is straight down to action, going purple in the opening sector, but it's Audi's Nico Hulkenberg gets us of the mark, though, with a time of 1:18.168.

Norris locks up at the end of the lap and slots into fifth on the timesheets. Lewis Hamilton also has a moment at Turn 13 and down in eighth.

Ryo Hirakawa gets a well done from Haas race engineer Laura Mueller. The reserve driver will be lining up in 19th place for his debut at the Mexico City Grand Prix tomorrow.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was quickest in Q1, but Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, who was third, asked if there was a problem with his engine in that session.

Fernando Alonso was noted for 'general safety' during his stoppage on track in Q1, which related to the Spaniard not fitting the steering wheel back on his car after climbing out. Luckily for the two-time world champion, it's just a reprimand this time.

    Q2 is green.

I've spoken to the team, it is a suspected water pressure issue linked to the ERS system so they had to stop the car.

The car is so far away and inaccessible for the team they will have to sit and wait [until the end of the session to recover it].

Haas substitute Ryo Hirakawa can't do enough to get out of the first part of qualifying, but as the Japanese driver has been thrown in at the deep end this weekend, I think that'll be OK.

Carlos Sainz in 16th as Q1 ends, but the Spaniard should be safe, as it's his team-mate in the drop zone who needs to improve.

Can Alex Albon do it? No.

Sainz goes through in P16, Albon is knocked out in P17.

Fernando Alonso is already out of this session with an issue, so Alex Albon, Ryo Hirakawa, Lance Stroll and the two Cadillacs are trying to save the skin.

George Russell is ninth at the moment but the Mercedes man gets a clean lap down and goes fourth on the timesheets.

We said earlier we thought qualifying was going to be who makes the fewest mistakes and that's how it looks to be playing out here - if you get a clean lap you could well get the fastest lap.

  10. Hamilton to the toppublished at 21:23 GMT 31 October

That's a good lap by Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion jumps ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc by 0.191 seconds with a time of 1:17.341.

Kimi Antonelli opening shot in Q1 is good enough for third place, pushing Max Verstappen down to fourth on the board, but the Italian did have a scrappy middle sector. But the aim of the game is to just get through to Q2 in the session, so it's the bottom six drivers who need up their game.

  13. Leclerc goes quickestpublished at 21:19 GMT 31 October

Pierre Gasly puts his Alpine top of the timesheets with a 1:18.194, but that's beaten by the McLaren of Lando Norris and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc is leading the world champion by 0.201 seconds, as Max Verstappen gets a flyer in and goes third.

I mean, any Mexican-themed object you want to grasp onto during this session, feel free.

The cars are back out on track in Mexico, and Kimi Antonelli, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and George Russell are all yet ti set a time in Q1.

Sergio Perez does have a marker to his name in 12th place, but the Cadillac suffers a big lock-up as he tries to chance another lap time, which has now been deleted for track limits.

The Aston Martin has been picked up by roadside assistance and moved to a safe location. Meanwhile, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has now been noted by race control for 'general safety'. We'll have to wait for the replays to confirm what exactly that's for.

    The session is green again.

Alonso doesn't know what was wrong, he wasn't feeling anything in the car but they obviously saw something in the data that meant they did not want to go any further and cause any damage.

  18. Postpublished at 21:12 GMT 31 October

That will be a blow for Fernando Alonso, who was as high as seventh in the opening practice session in Mexico.

Some of the big names are yet to bank a lap in Q3, and there are still three minutes until we get going again.

I am right at the top of the stadium section and I have eyes on Alonso. He has climbed out his car in disgust. We knew he could go well round here but he's not going to get the chance.

Fernando Alonso was on the team radio to ask why he was stopping - he didn't have any damage? His engineer was insistent he had to pull over to a safe spot off the track in the final sector.
