It's a tough opening draw for Arthur Fery, who came so close to being seeded for this year's US Open.

Lorenzo Musetti reached the quarter-finals in New York last year, while he's gone as far as the semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

However, after reaching the quarter-finals at this year's Australian Open, Musetti missed both the French Open and Wimbledon because of a thigh injury.

He has showed signs of rediscovering his best level in recent runs to the Washington and Cincinnati quarter-finals.

"Some weeks you get good draws, some weeks you get tougher draws - it is how it is," said Fery.

"I missed out by one spot on a seeded position and then I draw the 13th seed - it's a bit unfortunate but some things go your way and some things don't."

Arthur Fery's run to the semi-finals at SW19 scuppered an already-booked holiday to Greece, but a rearranged lads' trip to Spain provided the chance to recover from suddenly finding himself in the global spotlight.

He returned to tennis a month later, making his ATP Masters debut in Cincinnati, which ended in second-round defeat by fifth seed Alex de Minaur.

From there Fery travelled to North Carolina, where he finished runner-up to Peru's Ignacio Buse at the ATP 250 event in Winston-Salem.

And now he's got a tough first-round tie against Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in New York to contend with.

Elena Rybakina, speaking on-court after her round victory: "She [Frodin] played really well today and she has great shots, great serves and it was not easy. I'm just happy to be here, play here and thank you so much for coming and supporting us. It's always a nice atmosphere and I really enjoyed it. Just looking forward for the next one."

On returning from injury: "We see day-by-day, I'm glad I played the match and I won the match and we'll see how I am tomorrow because I had to take a break and wasn't playing or doing much physically. So, for me now it's a step at a time and the most important is to recover and listen to the body but for now it's been OK."

On potentially becoming world number one should she made the semi-finals: "I'm definitely motivated. I feel like I had the opportunities before and it didn't go my way. Of course, everybody plays really well and as I said, with this injury I've had I feel like for me, each day is important and of course it will be an amazing achievement but it's still too far [away].

"I need to focus on my day off tomorrow, my recovery and then just keep on going."

It was only seven weeks ago that Arthur Fery salvaged British hopes at Wimbledon with an astonishing run to the semi-finals.

He arrived at the Championships as the world number 114 and had never been beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

But the 24-year-old defied all expectations to reach the last four, where he finally fell to French Open champion Alexander Zverev.

Now Fery starts the US Open as the 33rd-ranked player in the world, the British men's number one and a recent first-time finalist on the ATP Tour.

Can he have another fairytale fortnight in New York?
