    Surrey v Notts 48-5

Ben Martindale has scored his first runs in first-class cricket driving one into the covers for two.

It's been an on-off start for the Nottingham-born player. He faced his opening three balls before the first rain break and one before the second.

  2. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 14:03 BST 20 August

    Derbyshire v Durham 5-0

Not surprisingly after that brooding dark cloud deposited a heavy thunderstorm over Derby, there has been no play since.

The presence of thunder also prevented the groundstaff from getting out to the wicket until 13:45 BST to begin the clear-up operation.

  3. Postpublished at 14:02 BST 20 August

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 63-3

A later lunch was taken at Utilita Bowl because of a morning shower in Southampton.

Play is back under way now.

  4. Postpublished at 13:56 BST 20 August

    Glos 72-4 v Worcs

We do have play at Cheltenham College where Tommy Boorman has unfurled the shot of the day with a glorious on-drive off Beyers Swanepoel.

We also have confirmation that Gareth Roderick is out of the match because of a back injury. Not easy trying to keep wicket in that situation.

    Leicestershire 71-4 v Glamorgan

    Make that five...

They've been fearing rain for a while at Leicester and now it's arrived.

Just three overs have been completed since lunch. Leicestershire have managed to avoid any further damage after losing four wickets in the second hour of the morning session.

It is a bit of a hokey-cokey across the country today with showers and persistent rain but we currently have four games where the players are off because of the weather.

    Division One:

    Surrey v Notts 42-5

    Warwickshire v Sussex 50-1

    Division Two:

    Derbyshire v Durham 5-0

Lancashire v Northants - yet to start

Derbyshire v Durham 5-0 (rain stopped play)

This was the scene in Derby just over an hour ago when Derbyshire and Durham attempted to begin their Division Two match.

Unsurprisingly, given those clouds, a very heavy downpour followed soon afterwards and just 16 balls were possible in the first session.

No word yet on a possible time for a resumption but we'll bring you any news when we get it.

Resumption planned at the Ovalpublished at 13:48 BST 20 August

    Surrey v Notts 42-5

The rain has stopped at the Oval and the covers are off.

The aim is to restart at 14:00.

Zak Crawley and Sam Northeast are back at the crease for Kent against Middlesex after lunch and have brought up their century partnership for the second wicket.

Crawley is 57 not out, Northeast has 32.

  10. Rain delays on 'frustrating morning' at Edgbastonpublished at 13:41 BST 20 August

    Warwickshire v Sussex 50-1

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Radio Sussex

A frustrating morning at Edgbaston with just 13 overs bowled between the showers.

Sussex will be pleased to have reached lunch with just one down, although skipper Tom Haines has ridden his luck, twice inside-edging past his leg stump - Chris Woakes was the unfortunate bowler on each occasion.

Woakes did however take the wicket of Daniel Hughes courtesy of a sharp catch taken by Ed Barnard in the gully.

Tom Clark, playing his first Championship game since a knee injury in May, has looked assured on his return to the side and played the shot of the morning - a beautiful cover drive off Ethan Bamber.

  11. Foxes labour to lunchpublished at 13:38 BST 20 August

    Leicestershire 63-4 v Glamorgan

At 35-0 after the first hour, a slow-going, but dogged Leicestershire batting display looked to be setting them up for a decent total.

But a quick collapse in the second hour of the morning session has cost them. Glamorgan found their lines and lengths, and the two-tone pitch (AKA the mullet - I'm going to keep saying it) appears to be gathering some uneven bounce, particularly when it hits the lip between the greener middle section, and the more closely shaven ends.

Rishi Patel and Rehan Ahmed fell in quick succession, before a comical run out of Sheridon Gumbs, where he simultaneously ran three (changing direction twice) and none, made the scoreboard take an ugly turn.

Hamza Shaikh's dismissal at the end to Ben Kellaway added insult to injury, and now the hosts are in trouble.

Credit Glamorgan though - they bowled with consistency and accuracy, and have probably justified sticking the Foxes in to bat.

  12. Pitch inspection at Old Traffordpublished at 13:36 BST 20 August

Lancashire v Northants - start delayed

It is not raining in the Old Trafford area and as a result, the umpires are going to take another look at conditions at 14:15 BST.

    Fingers crossed for that one!

  13. rain stops play

Rain stops play at The Ovalpublished at 13:32 BST 20 August

    Surrey v Notts 42-5

We have needed rain for weeks across most of the country. So the solution to end the drought - resume county cricket of course!

Surrey and Notts come back onto the field after ending their early lunch.

We manage four balls with one run scored and then the players are running for cover as the heavens open...

  14. Pitch inspectionpublished at 13:28 BST 20 August

    #bbccricket

While our county games are off for lunch, rain or a bit of both, some news from Headingley.

There will be an inspection at 13:45 BST to see if and when day two of the first Test between England and Pakistan can begin.

You can follow updates of that here.

  15. Lunch at Utilita Bowlpublished at 13:21 BST 20 August

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 63-3

Hampshire used the new ball to good effect early on, particularly Kyle Abbott, who took 2-3 in nine overs either side of a 30-minute rain delay.

But since being reduced to 9-3, Yorkshire have recovered well, with James Wharton and Matt Revis putting on 54 so far for the fourth wicket.

  16. 'Striving too hard for wicket-taking balls?'published at 13:17 BST 20 August

    Somerset 134-2 v Essex

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Essex's bowlers have yet to justify Tom Westley's decision to ask Somerset to bat after winning the toss.

Maybe they are striving too hard for wicket-taking balls and offering up too many scoring opportunities in the process?

Tom Lammonby was batting beautifully when a ball from Sam Cook flicked unluckily off his back pad into the leg-stump.

But his fellow left-hander Josh Thomas has gone on to a handsome half-century, latterly in company with Somerset's debutant, Henry Nicholls.

He has that touch of class that you would expect from a New Zealander with 60 Tests under his belt.

50 up for Yorkshirepublished at 13:09 BST 20 August

    Hampshire v Yorkshire 51-3

James Wharton and Matt Revis have steadied things for Yorkshire either side of the rain delay in Southampton, the visitors having slipped to 9-3 early on.

Their fourth-wicket stand is worth 42 at the moment, with the lunch break about 10 minutes away.

  19. Lunch at Leicesterpublished at 13:09 BST 20 August

    Leicestershire 63-4 v Glamorgan

After being put in Leicestershire have approached their innings in a cautious manner but it hasn't worked for them and they're in trouble at lunch.

The home county have prepared a strange looking pitch, green in the middle and brown at both ends.

A slow outfield hasn't helped the scoring pace with only seven boundaries in the session.

Glamorgan have been patient in the field and it took an hour before they made a breakthrough but they then got two in quick succession with Zain-ul-Hassan claiming the first and overseas debutant Ray Toole getting the other.

The third wicket was gifted in the form of the farcical run out of Sheridon Gumbs and if there was any doubt as to who's had the better of the opening session, that was resolved when spinner Ben Kellaway claimed the fourth wicket, that of Hamza Shaikh, just before the interval.

  20. Lunch at Edgbastonpublished at 13:05 BST 20 August

    Warwickshire v Sussex 50-1 (13 overs)

Sussex bring up their 50 in the final over before lunch after a truncated morning session in gloomy Birmingham.

After a delayed start, Chris Woakes struck in only his second over to have Dan Hughes caught in the gully.

But that was just before the rain returned - and a further weather break means that only 13 overs have been bowled.

The two Toms have made steady progress, with skipper Haines on 28 and Clark on 11.
