    Middx 238-8 - target 356

Tom Helm is looking better than some of his team-mates higher up the order at the moment.

He clips Matt Quinn to mid-wicket for his third four and has 13 not out from 10 balls so far.

Can someone please have a word with Ben!! Just come back and enjoy your cricket under Root! No captaincy pressure. He could be the difference in the Ashes!

    Dave Sneddon, London

Two half-centuries in the match and seven wickets in less than 12 overs of bowling was some contribution from Ben Stokes.

If he plays Championship cricket next spring and puts in performances like that, imagine the clamour for his England return.

    Somerset v Essex 355-6 - lead by 44

Unsurprisingly, it's spin at both ends now at Taunton as Archie Vaughan is called up for a bowl.

Simon Harmer top edges as he attempts a reverse sweep, but the ball clears the slip fielder and reaches the third man boundary.

Injudicious might be one way of describing that shot. Good result, though.

    Hants 142-4 v Yorks - Target 278

An hour gone at Southampton and Hants have put on 35 for the early loss of Tom Prest.

With Toby Albert looking solid at one end and others flying a little closer to the flame at the other - Ben Brown has 16 from 39 balls - Hants will feel right in this.

There has not been as much turn in this fourth day pitch as Yorks might have hoped but early days still.

    Boorman c Allison b Waite 2 (Glos 303-5 v Worcs - lead by 188)

A personal best in the first innings, but a brief stay in the second for Tommy Boorman.

He plays at one from Matthew Waite and it's well pouched low at first slip by Ben Allison.

Gloucestershire's lead is less than 200 so they still have some batting to do this morning.

  6. Glamorgan target down to double figurespublished at 12:02 BST 23 August

    Leics v Glam 160-6 - target 257

Chris Cooke leans back to hit Tom Scriven for the batter's first boundary of the day.

Cooke up to 15 with Kiran Carlson on 90 and Glamorgan now need 97 more runs to win.

An hour into the final day, Leicestershire have the one wicket of Andy Gorvin and need four more to win.

    Three results still realistically possible.

  7. Stokes provides 'wow' factor for Durhampublished at 12:02 BST 23 August

    Durham (283 & 295-6 dec) beat Derbyshire (156 & 84) by 338 runs

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell hailed former England captain Ben Stokes as "the recruit of the year" following his match-winning display on day three against Derbyshire.

Stokes smashed 66 not out off 55 balls and then took 5-17 as Durham bowled the home side out for just 84 to win by 338 runs and further boost their chances of promotion..

"I'm a cricket fan and it was a sad day when he decided to retire (from Test cricket). When he said 'I'm going to go back and play for Durham' my ears sparked and the way he's dragging every young fellow with him and trying to make them better it's hard not to just go 'wow'," said Campbell.

"He is the recruit of the year for us and now I guess I've got to try and work out a way how I'm going to contract him for next year!"

    Lancs 57-4 v Northants - Target 446

Luke Procter sends one in short and Rocky Flintoff, just two balls into his innings, takes on the hook/pull. He doesn't nail it and a top edge flies over the cordon behind and goes for four.

    This could be entertaining.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:59 BST 23 August

    Roland-Jones b Dudgeon 8 (Middx 225-8 v Kent - target 356)

Inside edge as Toby Roland-Jones tries to drive Keith Dudgeon's first ball of the day and his off-stump is out of the ground.

Tom Helm is the new batter and drives the next one past mid-off for four before steering it through the covers off the back foot for another.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:57 BST 23 August

    Pepper c Abell b Leach 4 (Somerset v Essex 350-6 - lead by 39)

    Jack Leach strikes again.

Michael Pepper pushes hard at a ball which turns from just outside off-stump and Tom Abell swoops to his left at second slip to take his second catch of the morning.

The 'slope' Essex are now on is getting increasingly slippery.

  11. First boundaries of the day at Grace Roadpublished at 11:56 BST 23 August

    Leics v Glam 156-6 - target 257

It's the batters equivalent of "Bang, Bang".

It took 15 overs before Kiran Carlson clipped one off his toes through long-on for the first boundary of the morning at Leicester.

He followed that up with the second four of the day in the same over from Tom Scriven.

Glamorgan close to getting their target down to double figures.

  12. 350 up for Essexpublished at 11:55 BST 23 August

    Somerset v Essex 350-5 - lead by 39

How is Michael Pepper going to approach batting against Jack Leach?

He tries to cut and the ball flies over the head of second slip for four.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:53 BST 23 August

    Bohannon b Procter 10 (Lancs 51-4 v Northants - Target 446)

Josh Bohannon holds a pose and it is a very solid defensive block in essence.

Trouble is, Luke Procter has got the ball through it before it formed properly and middle and off have been hit.

Lancs are flagging with a mountain to climb. Is Rocky Flintoff the man to scale it? He is at the crease with Arav Shetty.

  14. Postpublished at 11:53 BST 23 August

    Middx 221-7 v Kent - target 356

Despite the loss of three Middlesex wickets already, Toby Roland-Jones certainly won't have given this up and he drives Matt Milnes through the covers for four.

  15. 50 runs

50 for Toby Albertpublished at 11:52 BST 23 August

    Hants 138-4 v Yorks - Target 278

Toby Albert came to the crease in the eighth over of this chase when Ali Orr departed so he has taken his time to reach his half-century here in the 52nd over.

But a clipped single off Dom Bess brings up his fourth of the season in 138 balls with six fours.

It is exactly the anchor innings that Hants needed and with others playing around him, Hants could chase this down.

When the Championship was one division of 18 counties, Leicestershire won it in 1996 and again in 1998. changing it to how it is now was done to make sure the " big " counties boss it. A la "big 6" in the Premier League

    Paul Snart, Leicester

Interesting point, Paul. Since the introduction of two divisions in 2000, only two non-Test hosting counties have won the Championship. Sussex did it in 2003, 2006 and 2007 and Essex in 2017 and 2019.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:48 BST 23 August

    Allison c Rew b Leach 114 (Somerset v Essex 346-5 - lead by 35)

Magnificent delivery by Jack Leach. Turn and bounce, Charlie Allison feathers through to the keeper and James Rew manages to cling onto it up by his right shoulder.

Both overnight Essex batters are gone and the danger of defeat is once again very much present.

That said, it was an excellent innings by the highly-promising Allison, who faced 254 balls and hit two sixes and 13 fours - though none of them this morning.

Leach now has 3-57 from 43 overs in this innings.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:46 BST 23 August

    Bailey b Guthrie 19 (Lancs 51-3 v Northants - Target 446)

Lovely ball from the left-armer Liam Guthrie.

It's angled across towards first slip from over the wicket but tails back late as Tom Bailey looks to drive and clatters the off-stump out of the ground.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:44 BST 23 August

    Price b Allison 77 (Glos 292-4 v Worcs - lead by 175)

Just after Ollie Price and James Bracey had struck up their century partnership and Price is on his way back to the dressing room.

A fine delivery from Ben Allison - his first wicket of this innings after 5-19 in the first - beats the bat and makes a mockery of leg-stump.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:41 BST 23 August

    Gohar lbw b Quinn 1 (Middx 210-7 v Kent - target 356)

All going one way now at Northwood.

Zafar Gohar is stuck on the crease facing Matt Quinn and is given out lbw.

He doesn't seem thrilled with the decision - presumably he felt it might be going over the top.
