Not sure I understand rationale behind promoting Sam Curran. Was he meant to counter-attack? If so did anyone tell him!

    David, Durham

What’s the obsession with Sam Curran? Bang average with bat and ball - should be nowhere near our World Cup XI.

    Max, London

Not sure on what basis Sam Curran has been selected? No form at all this summer and certainly none in the 50-over game. Do the selectors only ever look at the same 25 names?

    Simon, Southampton

Sam Curran has just jabbed this and helped it around the corner. If he got more on it it would've flown for six.

Just as England were poking their head out the other side, they lose a wicket.

    Soft.

Banged in short from Haris Rauf and Sam Curran's pull shot has absolutely no conviction in it. He helps it into the hands of the sub fielder at square leg and England are in a pickle.

England's highest successful chase in ODIs on all venues in Pakistan came in October 2000.

Andrew Flintoff top-scored with 84 - and sweated buckets - as England chased down Pakistan's 304-9 to win by five wickets in Karachi.

A nice little contest between Jordan Cox and Naseem Shah.

Cox drives gloriously past extra cover for four, before Naseem responds with a beauty to beat the outside edge.

Naseem Shah has bowled 16 balls on a fuller length than the ball that dismissed Root today - however just one delivery has reached the batter lower than Root's dismissal.

He can count himself very unlucky, and Pakistan are right back in this game.

What this really requires for England is someone to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and play that match-winning innings.

Sam Curran continues to patiently nudge the ball around for singles.

England need 133 off 20 overs.

After a fine summer, this is a good opportunity for Jordan Cox to prove his credentials further in England's middle order.

Naseem Shah celebrates with passion. He deserves that wicket. He was brought back in to get the big man out and he has done.

Pakistan turn back to pace, and it works a treat.

A huge breakthrough as Naseem Shah gets one to keep a little low, and Root goes back but gets a bottom edge on to his stumps.

Good pace from Naseem too, and England are in a spot of bother.

Joe Root reverse sweeps nicely for a couple more.

It's been a textbook Root ODI knock so far. He's only hit two fours but is still scoring quickly, on 33 off 32 balls.

Good response from Minhas Arafat, just three singles off his over.

The spinners continue to rattle through these middle overs to test England's patience.

People are talking about Banton having the cement his place in the side. It is worth remembering that he has done as well as anyone in the side and Bethell hasn’t played for months. On current form I would argue that Bethell shouldn’t be a shoe-in.

A lot of patience showed out there by these two and this one dropped a little short and Sam Curran heaves it.

It's brilliant timing and finally England get a boundary.

    There it is!

Sam Curran injects some life into England's chase with a whopping six over the leg side. Too short from Ayub and the spinner is punished.

That's England's first boundary since the 18th over.

  17. Eng 147-3published at 25 overs

    Target 303

The overs are whizzing by, with an abundance of singles and nobody having to chase the ball to the boundary.

England's positive start means they're not in a rush, though. They need a further 156.

The spinners have really put the brakes on England here.

Saim Ayub ticks through another miserly over as the halfway mark approaches.

Oooh, Root almost breaks England's boundary drought with a reverse sweep but it's hauled in just inside the rope at fine leg.

    They come back for three.

A partnership from England is needed but if Pakistan can get Joe Root or Sam Curran out soon then they're in a strong position.

The spinners have slowed things down now.
