Taylor Fritz is eyeing a quick finish here.

After wrapping up the second set with a double break, the ninth seed breaks Darwin Blanch again immediately in the third.

The American has to withstand two break points in the following game, as his 18-year-old opponent sets up his first opportunities of the match, but Fritz battles back from 15-40 to put himself on course for the second round.

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 3-3 Cobolli

Another half chance opens up for Francisco Comesana, who is looking the calmer of the two players at the moment.

He moves 15-30 in front before Flavio Cobolli slams down an ace and then pelts a massive forehand winner into the corner.

The Italian cups his ear and demands more noise from the crowd before taking the hold with a backhand winner.

Thea Frodin once played a young Serena Williams on the big screen. Now, the teenager is following in the American great’s footsteps at the US Open.

In 2021, Frodin was chosen as a tennis-playing body double for the actress cast as her childhood idol in the Oscar-nominated film ‘King Richard’.

Five years on, the 17-year-old is making her WTA Tour and Grand Slam main-draw debut at her home major after winning the United States Tennis Assocation (USTA) Girls’ 18s National Championships to earn a wildcard.

This season, Frodin has also achieved her best singles result as a junior at a major (reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open girls' singles), made her qualifying debut on the WTA Tour as a wildcard in Miami, and reached the final of the W35 Arcadia event on the ITF Tour.

After clinching back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Miami in the spring, world number one Aryna Sabalenka had a 3,000-point lead at the top of the rankings.

However, a run of indifferent results has eroded her lead over Elena Rybakina to just 434 points.

As reigning champion, Sabalenka has a hefty 2,000 points to defend in New York. For Rybakina, who enjoyed a career-best run to the fourth round last year, that number is only 240.

Even if Sabalenka retains the title, Rybakina could still rise to the top by reaching the semi-finals.

Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are also in the running for the top ranking.

Excellent news on the rain front... play is getting under way on the outdoor courts!

Up first, two-time Grand Slam champion Elena Rybakina begins her US Open campaign against Thea Frodin - a teenage American wildcard ranked more than 583 places below her.

Rybakina is not only bidding for her maiden singles crown in New York - and her second major of the year after winning the Australian Open - but could also become world number one for the first time in her career over the next fortnight.

  9. Fritz in complete controlpublished at 19:49 BST 1 September

    *Fritz 6-3 5-2 Blanch

While young Darwin Blanche will one day hope to evolve into a top-10 player like his compatriot, it's not looking like this is going to be his day.

Having broken in the sixth game to win the first set, Taylor Fritz eventually strikes in game five of the second - although he requires a fourth break point to do so from 0-40 up.

Blanch continues to battle away, recovering from 0-40 down two games later, but again he can't prevent Fritz from breaking.

The former finalist will serve for a two set lead.

  10. Cobolli holds servepublished at 19:47 BST 1 September

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 2-2 Cobolli

Not the easiest of games for Flavio Cobolli, with some silly misses creeping in, but he gets the job done and levels the decider.

    Back to you, Francisco.

Well, that advantage didn't last long for Francisco Comesana.

Flavio Cobolli only needs one of his three break points as he watches a forehand by the world number 119 sail long.

    Back on serve.

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 2-0 Cobolli

A good chance here for Flavio Cobolli to strike back immediately as he opens up a 0-30 lead.

And there's another one that goes his way. Three break back points for the Italian.

  13. Comesana breaks early in fifth setpublished at 19:40 BST 1 September

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 2-0 Cobolli

Francisco Comesana is looking a lot fresher after that break at the end of the fourth set and he's come out fighting in the decider.

The Argentine forces a series of mistakes off Flavio Cobolli's racquet and earns himself an early break. How decisive could that be?

  14. Comesana holds servepublished at 19:35 BST 1 September

    Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 1-0 Cobolli*

A reminder that Flavio Cobolli has never won a match from two sets down before. This will be his ninth attempt to break that unwanted record.

Francisco Comesana makes light work of his opening service game, holding to 15 and roaring "allez!" as he wraps it up with an ace.

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 0-0 Cobolli

Both Flavio Cobolli and Francisco Comesana took some time off court before this fifth-set decider, but they're back on court and ready to go again...

  16. Postpublished at 19:31 BST 1 September

The rain has stopped in New York and the courts are being dried again, so hopefully play can get started at 19:45 BST!

We won't hold our breath though... we've been here before!

  17. Game and first set - Fritzpublished at 19:27 BST 1 September

    Fritz 6-3 1-1 Blanch*

It's all proving nice and straightforward so far for Taylor Fritz.

The ninth seed serves out the opening set, with a single break enough to dampen teenager Darwin Blanch's hopes of causing a huge upset.

Fritz lost just seven points on serve in that opening set, so it looks as though it's going to be very tough for American wildcard Blanch, the world number 245, to do much damage here.

Fritz hammers that point home with a hold of serve to love in his opening game in set two.

  18. Game and fourth set - Cobollipublished at 19:24 BST 1 September

    *Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-6 0-0 Cobolli

Flavio Cobolli gets it with an ace! We're going the distance.

The Italian has worked his way back into this match and he's surely the favourite to go on and win it now.

  19. Set point Cobollipublished at 19:23 BST 1 September

    Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-5 Cobolli*

Flavio Cobolli allows Francisco Comesana back in, but at 30-30 the Italian lands a smash to bring up set point.

  20. Cobolli serving for fourth setpublished at 19:22 BST 1 September

    Comesana 6-3 6-2 3-6 4-5 Cobolli*

Flavio Cobolli whips his forehand around the ball and angles it across the court beautifully to open up a 30-0 lead. There was no stopping that one.
