Overnight road closures for resurfacing work are due to start as part of a £1.9m scheme to improve safety and traffic flow in Oadby.

Leicestershire County Council aims to improve and upgrade "busy transport hotspots" along the A6, centred at The Parade and Brabazon Road junctions.

On Monday, the A6 between Asda and New Street will shut from 20:00 and 06:00 GMT during weekdays until 27 November for resurfacing work to be carried out, with diversions in place.

The Reform UK-run authority said major improvements to the road included new and upgraded pedestrian and cycle crossings, raised crossings, footway improvements and new traffic signal equipment.

The project has been planned to be carried out in two phases.

The council said work around The Parade near Stoughton Road junction began in August and had been completed.

Overnight resurfacing work will now start and expected to take three weeks.

Diversion routes will be in place via London Road, Leicester Road and Brabazon Road.

The authority said access for residents and businesses would be maintained where needed and affected properties had been notified.

Work during the day will continue while the night time resurfacing is completed, it added.

'Benefits taking shape'

The council said the second phase would be focused around Brabazon Road junction and was due to begin early next year.

The improvements aim to make it easier and safer for people walking, wheeling and cycling through the town, it added.

Andrew Hamilton-Gray, cabinet member for highways and transport at the council, said: "Good progress has been made on this scheme and we're now moving into the next stage of work.

"Residents will already be seeing some of the benefits taking shape and the next stage will include resurfacing parts of the A6 to provide a smoother journey for everyone.

"We know roadworks can be frustrating at times, and we're grateful for the patience shown by local people, businesses and visitors while this investment is completed."
