A van driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after a motorcyclist died in a crash in a village.

Leicestershire Police said a silver Mercedes Vito van and red Yamaha motorcycle collided in Desford Road, Newtown Unthank, shortly after 07:00 GMT on Friday.

The 19-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

The driver of the van, a 43-year-old man from Leicester, is currently in police custody following his arrest.

Officers said the motorcyclist had been turning into Botcheston Road from Desford Road when the crash happened.

The road has been closed while investigations continue.

Det Con Emma Neeves said: "I want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision and who may have dashcam footage.

"We are working to establish what has led to the collision and would like any information that may be able to assist our investigation."
