The States of Alderney has put out an expression of interest to turn two sites on the island into housing.

The former Old Connaught site in Royal Connaught Square and the States-owned land at Le Val have been put forward.

It was hoped the sites could be turned into independent living to help accommodate housing needs on island, island leaders said.

Iain MacFarlane, chair of the Housing Working Group, said: "No decision has been taken to proceed with either development, but these expressions of interest are an important step in exploring the options available to us."

The States of Alderney said a limited supply of affordable housing, the island's ageing population, alongside a demand for key workers and full-time working residents, was why more housing was needed on island.

MacFarlane said: "Housing remains one of the key issues facing Alderney, and we need to look at a range of options if we are to increase the type and number of homes available."

The Old Connaught Building is the site of the former Royal Connaught Care Home, which has stood unused for a number of years.

The States has invited developers and investors to explore opportunities for a residential-led redevelopment through either a long leasehold arrangement or purchase of the site.

The plans would be required to preserve and restore the listed principal building, a part of Royal Connaught Square and St Anne Conservation Area.

La Val field has been States-owned since 2025

Le Val field was purchased by the States in 2025 with the intention of supporting health and social care provision.

Le Val borders the existing Jubilee and Connaught care facilities.

The States said it was seeking interest for a development partner to explore opportunities for additional sheltered or assisted-living accommodation.

If successful, the partner would work with the government and existing care providers to identify the island's current and future needs, before making plans for a potential development.

The site could include independent living with minimal support, to more supported provision to help residents to live independently for longer.
