A fire caused by a stray firework has severely damaged the roof of a house in Leicestershire.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Sussex Road, Wigston, at about 21:30 GMT on Thursday.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service sent five engines, plus an aerial ladder platform, and worked "through the night" to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesperson for the service said that while no-one was injured in the fire, the incident "could have been a lot worse".

"Bonfire Night is over, but with Diwali on Sunday we must reiterate that organised, public displays are always safer than setting off fireworks in your garden," the spokesperson said.
