Demolition works on a Lancashire shopping centre are well under way as part of a project to replace it with a modern retail complex.

Pendle Rise Shopping Centre in Nelson, which opened in the 1960s, shut its doors in November.

A modern shopping centre will replace it with parking for 150 cars and landscaped outdoor areas as part of a £25m government-backed Nelson Town Deal scheme.

Pendle Council has said the demolition and construction programme, which began at the start of September, will continue over the coming months.

The project has been met with a mixed response from locals, with some saying they were looking forward to the revamp, but others wanting to see parts of the centre kept for the future such as the floor mosaic depicting Admiral Nelson's compass.

Last month, Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, said: "After years of talking about the future of this site, people can now see real, physical change taking place in the heart of Nelson."
