The A12 has been closed in both directions at Colchester after a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

National Highways said it happened sometime before 17:43 GMT and both carriageways were shut between junction 28 for Colchester United's stadium and junction 26 for Eight Ash Green and Tollgate.

The roads agency said Essex Police and ambulance crews had been sent to the scene and the A12 was likely to remain closed throughout the evening.

Diversions through Colchester have been put in place and drivers stuck in traffic on the A12 were being told to wait for instructions from police before moving.

In a post on X at 19:41, National Highways: East said traffic would be released first on the London/southbound carriageway, followed by the Ipswich/northbound carriageway.
