A concrete dinosaur which has sat at the centre of a playground for almost half a century is to get a "much-needed" makeover.

Known as Derek, the dinosaur has been enjoyed by generations of children since he was installed in 1977 at South Street Recreation Ground in South Normanton, Derbyshire.

Derek was one of the first projects of Junction Arts, which is itself celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and the charity has launched an appeal to restore the reptile as well as tell his story.

Managing director Emily Bowman said: "Derek's past is something of a mystery, but we know he's been through a lot."

"When we started to look back at Junction Arts' history, Derek was one of the early projects that stood out, and just like us, 50 years on, he's still standing," said Bowman.

"From vandalism and fire to decades of wind, rain and weathering, this local landmark has certainly stood the test of time.

"Now, as Derek approaches his 50th birthday, we think it's time for a fresh start!"

Generations have played on the concrete creation over the years

Junction Arts has said that little is known about the sculpture's original purpose or the full story behind its creation, but community engagement has shown South Normanton residents have a strong desire to see him restored.

Work is planned to ensure Derek remains safe and durable while a new colour will be chosen, with families in the village helping to create a storybook to explore his history and imagine his future.

Bolsover District and South Normanton Parish councils have both made donations to the project.

Parish councillor Emma Stevenson said: "Over the years, the parish council has supported the continued refurbishment and 'spring clean' of our dinosaur.

"It is a testament to Junction Arts that within my family, my children and now my grandchildren enjoy the park and the dinosaur."
