The DIY Dalek raising funds for cancer research
Yorkshire Cancer ResearchA retired carpenter and Doctor Who fanatic has created a full-sized Dalek to support life-saving cancer research.
Martin Williams, from east Leeds, was told to head straight to A&E after his kidneys stopped functioning properly due to an enlarged prostate. Further investigations revealed he had advanced prostate cancer.
Diagnosed in 2020, the 73-year-old decided to put his passion for woodwork to create something truly out-of-this-world and help raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
He said he was proud the creation, due to be sold at auction, "will help fund research that saves lives in Yorkshire".
Born and raised in Leeds with a carpentry career spanning five decades, Williams has made a number of projects for his family, friends and the wider community - and can now add the Doctor's nemesis to his impressive portfolio.
"It had such a striking shape, and I knew exactly what type of wood I would use to recreate it," Williams said.
"I could see the sculpture in my head before I'd even started."
However, in 2020, plans had to be put on hold when Williams found out he had cancer.
"I was due to undergo a different operation to remove a hernia, but they ran blood tests the day before which revealed something wasn't right with my kidneys," he said.
Yorkshire Cancer Research"I went to see my GP about the results, where I was told to go straight to the emergency department at St James's University Hospital."
Williams was later diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and went on to receive hormone treatment and 22 rounds of radiotherapy.
Despite the challenges of his cancer treatment, Williams has dedicated countless hours to building the Dalek - named Rustic.
Neil Preston, Director of Fundraising and Supporter Experience at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said funds raised from the upcoming sale would help the charity "find new and better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer in Yorkshire".
The 5ft pine Dalek was built in Williams' workshop at the bottom of his garden.
"I'm proud of how the Dalek turned out," he said.
"It's made of reclaimed pitch pine - some of which will be more than 1,000 years old - and it has a lovely, glossy colour.
Yorkshire Cancer ResearchThe auction will take place in February next year, ahead of the charity's 2027 Gala Dinner.
Preston said: "Martin's creativity and hard work is an extraordinary example of how people in Yorkshire go above and beyond to support the life-saving mission of Yorkshire Cancer Research."
Sadly, in November 2025, Martin found out that his cancer had returned.
"Unfortunately, the cancer has spread into my lymph nodes and bones," he said.
"There are a lot of tiring side effects, but 20 years ago, I wouldn't have been able to benefit from this treatment.
"I feel lucky to still be here."
