Masked youths smashed cars in 'mindless vandalism'

A gang of masked youths smashed up cars in a supermarket car park and in a nearby residential street in "an appalling act of criminal damage", police have said.

About 20 people are said to have targeted vehicles in the Asda car park and in Hey Road in Huyton, Merseyside, at about 20:00 GMT on Friday.

A CCTV video shared on social media shows more than a dozen males dressed in black, with some stamping through the windows of parked cars.

"This was an appalling act of criminal damage that will not be tolerated," said Insp David Hassett of Merseyside Police. "We are under no illusion how this mindless vandalism can have a significant impact on the owners of these vehicles."

He added: "It's a huge inconvenience and potentially a costly measure to get a vehicle repaired, so I completely understand why people will be angered by what happened.

"I want to reassure them that we are doing everything we can to identify the males involved."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force.
