Months of repair work to restore a Grade II-listed chimney will begin on Monday.

Specialist contractors working on Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle will mend cracks in the brickwork, as well as repointing areas of stonework and replacing damaged or missing bricks.

Standing about 270ft (82m) tall, the historic chimney was built for an adjoining cotton mill in 1836, according to Cumberland Council.

Restoration work is expected to be completed next spring.

The lofty chimney, described as a "key landmark" in the city, was previously restored in 1999 using funding from Heritage England, the Lottery Fund and Carlisle City Council, the council said.
