Extra police out for Halloween and Bonfire Night
West Yorkshire PoliceExtra police will be on the streets of West Yorkshire for Halloween and Bonfire Night, the county's force has said.
A spokesperson said the two dates, 31 October and 5 November, were among the busiest times of the years for officers and urged those out and about to be considerate.
In other years, the force has had to deal with dozens of motorcycles being used dangerously in a group "ride-out", serious disorder which saw riot police being supported by the force helicopter and also helping fire crews when they have been attacked.
The force also said anyone using Halloween and Bonfire Night as an "excuse for disorder" would be prosecuted.
A spokesperson urged trick-or-treaters to be mindful of those who do not want people knocking on their doors and said it was also providing downloadable signs to put off callers.
Ch Supt Sareth Humpage said: "Halloween isn't an enjoyable time for everyone as we recognise that things that might seem like harmless fun to some can cause a lot of anxiety, stress and worry for some people.
"I would ask that parents keep an eye on their children out trick or treating and encourage them to only visit the homes of friends and neighbours, rather than strangers."
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) also urged residents to use LED candles instead of real ones to prevent fires.
District Commander Dale Gardiner said: "Candles can help create a Halloween atmosphere, but it's important to use them safely."
He added: "If you do use real candles, keep them well away from curtains, Halloween decorations, and any other flammable materials, and never leave them unattended and always make sure candles are fully extinguished before you leave the house or go to bed."
