A man who accidentally stabbed his friend while trying to intimidate a group of people has been jailed.

Safa Lawan, 23, of Russell Street in Peterborough, was "wildly swinging a knife around" in Highbury Street in Millfield in the city on 28 September when he caught his friend's shoulder, causing a minor injury, Cambridgeshire Police said.

Lawan pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a knife in public.

He was jailed for 22 months at Cambridge Crown Court on 27 October.

The day before the confrontation Lawan had sent a man threatening messages on social media demanding money, police said.

When he saw the man with a group of people, Lawan approached them and began threatening them with a knife, when he managed to injure a friend who was with him.

No-one else was injured and the group managed to get away.

Lawan was arrested later the same day.

Det Con Hannah Worthington said: "Lawan's behaviour was completely reckless - demonstrated by the fact he accidentally caught his friend with the knife he was swinging.

"I'm pleased nobody was seriously injured and Lawan was soon apprehended. He has now faced justice and been jailed for his actions."
