Fireworks were launched at a fire crew as they tried to put out an out-of-control bonfire.

They were in Greenthorn Crescent in Preston trying to deal with a blaze that had spread to a lamp post when they came under attack.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer Jon Charters said while no-one was hurt, it was a "reckless, dangerous and utterly unacceptable act".

A 14-year-old boy was arrested and bailed, Lancashire Police said.

Charters said: "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the deliberate attack on our firefighters.

"There is no excuse for attacking emergency service workers.

"Our firefighters are there to protect people and property, often in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

"They should never have to face deliberate attacks while carrying out their duties.

"This is not a joke or harmless behaviour. It puts lives at risk and threatens the safety of the very community we are there to protect."

Police said a damaged lamp post was made safe by Electricity North West.
