An army officer who set two Guinness World Records during a polar expedition is to speak at an event aimed at helping veterans.

Capt Preet Chandi set the records on an expedition to the Antarctic in 2023 when she skied to the South Pole.

She will be appearing at the day-long Rise and Thrive event at the Maison Dieu Hall in Dover, Kent, on 30 October.

Organised by the local district council, it is intended to offer tailored support to those returning to civilian life.

Organisations such as the Royal British Legion, Royal British Veterans Enterprises, the Royal Marines, Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service will also be on hand to offer advice.

Chandi had planned an expedition to the North Pole this year but had to call it off in March after being unable to raise the funds.

Lynne Wright, Dover District Council's portfolio holder for community and corporate assets, said: "The day is all about bringing our armed forces community together, helping people to access practical support and advice, and providing an opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences.

"We are also incredibly pleased to welcome Preet Chandi as our guest speaker and I'm sure her remarkable story of resilience and determination will be an inspiration to everyone attending."

Tickets can be booked through the council's website.
