Riot police were sent to the Meadow Well estate on Thursday

Missiles, fireworks and bricks have been thrown at emergency crews in "planned violent disorder", police have said.

Northumbria Police said its crews had faced the attacks after responding to reports of anti-social behaviour in the Waterville Road area of Meadow Well in North Tyneside at about 21:00 GMT on Thursday, with pictures showing riot police at the scene.

The force said the disorder was linked to misinformation about a building's future as a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). Police said a supermarket was planned for the site.

Officers said the behaviour was "completely unacceptable" and it was sharing the information to stop speculation which "may lead to further disorder".
