Berwins Solicitors in Harrogate recently celebrated 40 years in business

A North Yorkshire law firm is preparing to call in administrators after four decades in business.

Berwins Solicitors, based in Harrogate, employs about 40 people and specialises in family, property, and wills and probate law.

The firm filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator with the High Court on Monday.

It comes after Berwins celebrated its 40th anniversary at Cedar Court in Harrogate last month. The BBC has contacted the firm for comment.

A spokesperson from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) said: "We are aware of the situation and are liaising with the firm as it effects an orderly closure.

"We continue to monitor the situation, and would only take action if the interests of clients were at risk."

According to the SRA, more than 200 law firms have closed in 2026 so far, including those which have ceased practising or merged with another company.

I added that, as it prepares to close, Berwins should be in touch with their clients throughout the process.

The Harrogate office was set up by Paul Berwin in 1986, which expanded to a Leeds office in 2013.

Berwin stepped down from the company earlier this year, with Danielle Day now listed as the managing director.
