A man who filmed himself raping a teenager and secretly recorded other girls with a hidden bathroom camera has been jailed for 20 years and eight months.

John Curtis, 41, recorded footage of the offences against a 16-year-old girl as she slept on 1 May 2026.

Douglas Courthouse was told devices seized when Curtis was arrested revealed the camera footage, as well as more than 15,000 indecent images of children.

Deemster Graeme Cook said it was a case of "extreme sexual depravity".

Curtis pleaded guilty to a total of 33 offences, including rape, attempted rape and the taking of and possession of indecent images.

The court heard the victim called police after waking to find him attacking her.

When he was arrested a short time later, he was carrying several devices, including a small camera, a hard drive and two mobile phones in a plastic box.

They were found to contain images of the rape, as well as footage of five other girls using a bathroom, including the shower.

The hard drive was also found to have folders containing images of children being abused, including one video showing the rape of a baby.

Jailing him, Deemster Cook said: "Some of your victims described you as a monster, and I totally agree."

The range of Curtis's offending was "beyond belief", he said, adding: "You have traumatised six young ladies."

The teenage victim who was raped "will perhaps never get over what you have done to her", he said.

The deemster also handed Curtis an extended licence period of 10 years after his release, telling him: "I believe the public are in need of protection from you."
