British Steel is encouraging local people to apply for next year's apprenticeship and graduate schemes, calling them "positions for the future".

More than 40 new workers will be employed across sites in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove, starting in September 2027.

They will join 70 apprentices and 16 graduates who started this September.

"It's no secret that British Steel will be going on a journey to decarbonise over the years, but we will still remain a significant employer... We need a continued pipeline of employees for the future needs of the business," said HR director Nick Ashton.

There will be 12 electrical apprenticeships and 12 mechanical apprenticeships at Scunthorpe, and eight electrical apprenticeships and eight mechanical apprenticeships at the Northern Mills sites at Teesside and Skinningrove.

Graduates will also be able to apply for roles in manufacturing operations, as well as mechanical, electrical and materials engineering.

Ashton said: "Over the next few years, we will be heavily investing in our infrastructure. We will be introducing new technology into the business as we prepare for the future.

"So these are long-term secure permanent opportunities that will be available for people. The future has not been as bright for British Steel for many a year as it is now."

The company said applicants for the apprenticeship programme would need a minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including maths, English and science.
