Supermarket truck damages 17th Century building
Dunster InfoA 17th Century pavilion which was built as a shelter for market stalls has been damaged by a reversing supermarket van.
The Dunster Yarn Market in Somerset, an octagonal pavilion built in 1609, was hit by a Tesco delivery truck as it tried to reverse around a sharp corner on Tuesday night.
A Tesco spokesperson said: "We're very sorry that a third-party driver delivering on our behalf has damaged a section of the Dunster Yarn Market."
Mark Taylor, who runs the Facebook group Dunster Info, said he was "very disappointed" about the damage to the pavilion's roof.
"As it was built in 1609 and an icon in the village, there was no need for a big vehicle to be going through the village as it wouldn't get past the tight high street corner.
"Maybe a warning sign needs to be put up," Taylor added.
Dunster InfoIn the 17th Century, Dunster was known for its yarn that was woven in nearby mills.
The damaged building was built as part of the village's yarn market, providing shelter from the weather.
The Tesco spokesperson added: "We are urgently investigating how this happened and will liaise with the local authorities to discuss next steps."
