Do men hire more women after having a daughter?

Do men start hiring more women once they become fathers to a daughter? New research out of Denmark has some answers. In this episode, Katty Kay speaks with Maddalena Ronchi, an economist and professor at Northwestern University, about what she calls 'the daughter effect.' Ronchi's research with Nina Smith compared companies where male hiring managers had a first daughter against companies where male managers had a son. They found that women’s employment and earnings improved at the companies where bosses recently became fathers to a daughter. In this episode, Katty and Maddalena unpack what this new study can and cannot tell us about why this shift happens - and what it means for how workplaces might change in the future.
