  1. Postpublished at 18:09 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 122-0

The spin experiment hasn't worked so Ben Sanderson is brought back into the Northants attack for a second spell.

Perhaps to try and stem the flow of runs as much as make a breakthrough.

And he duly exerts some discipline with a maiden.

    Nine overs to go.

  2. Postpublished at 18:07 BST 27 August

    Essex 0-0 v Surrey 183

A maiden to start the Essex reply.

17 overs left in the day at Chelmsford.

    Cooke b Baker (Glam 102-6 v Hants 162)

Sonny Baker is into the attack and the impact is instantaneous or almost as he strikes third ball.

First ball lbw appeal against Chris Cooke, second ball whistles past the edge and the third is through the gate and on to the top of middle.

Baker has only just replaced Scott Currie in accordance with the regulations which state that players returning unwanted from England squads can be dropped into games in the first two days of the contest.

  4. Postpublished at 18:01 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 122-0

Zak Crawley steps down the wicket and aims an almighty swing at Yuzi Chahal and smashes the India spinner back over his head for six.

The Kent opener picks up his ninth boundary as an expensive over leaks 12 runs.

Ben Compton then gets in on the act as he carves a wide ball from James Sales through the covers for four more. Kent are flying along.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Ben Kellawaypublished at 17:59 BST 27 August

    Glam 97-5 v Hants 162

Scott Currie and Ben Brown were convinced they had Ben Kellaway caught behind after he wafts at a leg side delivery but the umpire is unmoved.

Next ball Kellaway whips off his legs through midwicket to bring up his half century (53) in 84 balls with seven fours.

As it happens that is Scott Currie's final contribution to this match as he is replaced by England squad returnee Sonny Baker, exiting with a duck and 0-21.

  6. 100 runs

    100 partnershippublished at 17:54 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 101-0

Zak Crawley whips James Sales into the legside for two to bring up the 100-run opening stand with Ben Compton.

    It's come off a well-paced 141 balls.

Northamptonshire will be growing ever more desperate for a wicket after putting Kent into bat.

  7. wicket

SURREY 183 ALL OUTpublished at 17:53 BST 27 August

    Lawes c Pepper b Akhter 38 (Essex v Surrey 183)

Too good for Tom Lawes who is well and truly squared up to edge a lovely delivery from Zaman Akhter to Michael Pepper behind the stumps.

Surrey have not made it up to 200 but they have done well to climb from 146-8 and 161-9.

    Well played!

Zak Crawley on the backfoot and punches Yuzi Chahal to deep cover for a single which brings up his second half-century of the season - in consecutive games.

A 49th career first-class fifty has come off a brisk 74 balls and has given Kent a dream start.

It's been a tough season for Crawley who lost his place in the England side and has struggled a bit for runs.

Could this be the start of a barnstorming finish to the season?

  9. Close of play at CLSpublished at 17:49 BST 27 August

    Durham 100-3 v Glos 137

A low-key end to an opening day which was stuffed with action in this top vs bottom encounter.

Brydon Carse claimed two wickets as Glos stuttered to 13-3 after being put in, and Matty Potts claimed two more before Kasey Aldridge cut loose with 5-16 in five overs as the visitors were skittled for 137, 60 of which came from the defiant James Bracey.

The hosts were 16-2 in reply but a stand of 84 between David Bedingham and Will Rhodes (22) proved a valuable foundation before the latter departed shortly before the light failed and the covers came on. JT Langridge collected his first two First Class wickets on debut after joining on loan from Somerset.

Bedingham will resume on 59* - with 11 fours - with Ben Stokes at the other end tomorrow, weather permitting.

  10. dropped catch

Lawes on 32published at 17:44 BST 27 August

    Essex v Surrey 170-9

Tom Lawes pulls Zaman Akhter to deep backward square where Sam Cook dives forward to take the catch but he spills it.

Being generous, Cook's elbows might have bounced that out of his hands but he will be disappointed not to have taken that.

It would have ended the afternoon for the Essex bowlers but not so. Work on lads.

  11. Postpublished at 17:41 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 95-0

Another roll of the dice for the hosts as James Sales replaces the wayward Liam Guthrie.

Zak Crawley picks up a couple more and then turns a legside ball around the corner to move within a single of his fifty.

  12. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:40 BST 27 August

    Chahar c Westley b Cook 9 (Essex v Surrey 161-9)

A second dolly inside four overs for Tom Westley, who has now pouched two absolute sitters at mid on.

Just like Matthew Fisher earlier, Rahul Chahal just chips it up with a pitching wedge from 40 yards, landing it next to the flagstick.

  13. Kent openers turn the screwpublished at 17:34 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 82-0

Yuzvendra Chahal really scurries up to the wicket in his run-up and draws Zak Crawley forward with a beauty which beats the outside edge.

Wicketkeeper Lewis McManus whips off the bails but the opener is in his ground.

Liam Guthrie is still struggling with his line and goes too straight to Ben Compton who helps himself to a fifth boundary.

A sixth soon follows as Compton drives Guthrie handsomely down the ground.

Halfway through our evening allocation of 36 overs and a promising start is becoming a really good one.

  14. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:27 BST 27 August

    Dickson b Abbott 1 (Glam 77-5 v Hants 162)

Minimal foot movement from Sean Dickson who plays around this yorker from Kyle Abbott. Before he is through his half hearted flick the ball is through and rearranging his stumps.

Hants will feel they are back in charge of this contest but it is travelling at speed towards its destination and it would be tricky to call it right now.

  15. Postpublished at 17:24 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 68-0

Luke Procter turns to India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal after just 14 overs to try and find a breakthrough.

Eight from his opening over. This is turning into a really promising start from the visitors after losing the toss.

All change as Liam Guthrie returns.

  16. Bad light stops play at Hovepublished at 17:24 BST 27 August

    Sussex 77-2 v Somerset 202

Charlie Tear gets a thick outside edge past slip to the third man fence.

But then the umpires consult and take the players off for light.

    Still 20 overs scheduled.

  17. Bad light stops play at CLSpublished at 17:23 BST 27 August

    Durham 100-3 v Glos 137

Huge appeal from Daz Ahmed as he thumps David Bedingham on the pads.

Was it outside the line? James Tredwell the umpire thinks so, but nobody of a Glos persuasion agrees.

And now they are heading off the field for bad light with 26 overs left in the day.

Given the rain lurking on the radar, that might be the last action of the opening day.

  18. 50 runs

50 up for Kentpublished at 17:19 BST 27 August

    Northants v Kent 57-0

Zak Crawley clips down the leg sideImage source, Getty Images

Zak Crawley clips Luke Procter for four and brings up the half-century stand with Ben Compton in the 14th over.

It's not been easy out there, but aside from the Compton drop, they've looked largely assured.

A gloriously timed drive down the ground brings back-to-back boundaries and takes Crawley into the 30s.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:18 BST 27 August

    Fisher c Westley b Akhter 4 (Essex v Surrey 146-8)

Matthew Fisher can't believe it but if had walked up and placed the ball in Tom Westley's cap he could not have gift wrapped that better.

He tries to punch Zaman Akhter into the on side but gets the ball on the toe end of his bat and scoops to Westley at mid on.

He stood still as the Essex fielders converged to their huddle but it was more in disbelief at what he had done than any belief he was not out.

Surrey are in danger of being bowled out cheaply but how cheaply will not become apparent until Essex have had a go.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:16 BST 27 August

    Hughes lbw b Pretorius (Sussex 57-2 v Somerset 202)

    Somerset have a second wicket.

Migael Pretorius gets one to slide into the left-handed Daniel Hughes and he’s given lbw.

But he’s struck above the knee roll and on the angle, was that really straightening enough to take leg stump?

Looks like Hughes may have been unlucky.
