Surely it is time to give Jonathan Trott a go at leading this side. Did an unbelievable job coaching Afghanistan, and it's so frustrating as a fan hearing Brendon McCullum so unbothered and apathetic after every loss.

    An awful start from England.

They seemed a bit impatient and there is so much time in these 50-over games.

It was a little bit helter-skelter.

    Hmmm, stats.

The powerplay done and Pakistan skipper Shaheen Afridi turns to spin in the form of Saim Ayub's tweakers.

With mid-on up Sam Curran skips down and hits over the top. He ends up not quite timing it but the ball has enough on it to reach the boundary.

Curran's plan to throw Saim off his length has a partial victory as he picks up consecutive boundaries by leaning back and smearing him through mid-wicket.

England in ODIs since 1 January 2025:

    • When Root or Brook make 50+ | 9 wins, 7 losses
    • When Root or Brook don't make 50+ | 1 win, 9 losses

Sam Curran needs to be careful when those fielders go out.

That is something Pakistan will look to use when the fielding restrictions are lifted.

  6. Eng 56-4published at 10 overs

Haris Rauf goes short to Sam Curran with his penultimate delivery of the over but this time the England all-rounder opts to take it on, rolling his wrists as he hooks the Pakistan seamer for four.

    Nicely played.

An extraordinary dismissal to get rid of Jordan Cox - the plan wasn't hidden there from Pakistan. They are wearing fluorescent pink, and you can hardly miss that fielder!

  8. Eng 52-4published at 9.2 overs

Sam Curran is the new batter. He gets a bouncer from Haris Rauf first up and ducks out of the way.

Pakistan looking to ram home their advantage.

Pakistan seeing Jordan Cox was trying to play that shot, so they plugged that gap.

He was not able to stay on top of the bounce, it caught the outside edge because the face was open, and he guided the ball to fifth slip.

    England are reeling here.

Haris Rauf disappeared for eight runs in his first over, but has a wicket with the first ball of his second.

A bit of a soft dismissal as Jordan Cox opens the face attempting to guide the ball fine but ends up guiding it straight into the hands of Babar Azam who is stationed in a wide fourth slip position.

Probably the right shot from Cox, but wrongly executed.

Ben Duckett is waving and pointing towards the back of his leg. I think it is more than cramp.

Something for us to keep an eye on, Ben Duckett looks very uncomfortable with something to do with his left leg. He is limping after every ball here.

  14. Eng 52-3published at 9 overs

Ben Duckett takes on a drive to a wide delivery from Shaheen Afridi first up and the ball flies above where the slip cordon would have been and races through the vacant third region for four.

Duckett unable to punish a full toss from the Pakistan skipper at the end of the over.

Brendon McCullum looking as relaxed as someone on a sun lounger on holiday in Spain on the England balcony at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Jordan Cox is a mega talented player.

He seems to have the temperament to be able to deal with the patience in Test match cricket, but also has the expansive game to survive the limited overs format.

  16. Eng 44-3published at 8 overs

Jordan Cox seems someone with a pretty calm head on his shoulders. The beauty of one-day cricket is there is still a long way to go here, and sufficient time for England to rebuild before a big finish.

    Don't discount them yet.

Wow, this England team is awful. When the matches don’t matter, they’re fine, but as soon as there’s even the tiniest bit of pressure, they completely crumble. Their mentality is so poor and that, I’m afraid, comes from the captain and coach.

The skiddy Haris Rauf is tossed the ball by Shaheen Afridi.

Jordan Cox gets himself off the mark from his seventh ball with a confident drive down the ground.

England do have the batters to make the most of this, even though they are three down early. Pakistan are up and about, and that's a dangerous place for England to be.

  20. Eng 38-3published at 7 overs

A much more commanding over from Ben Duckett against Shaheen Afridi.

The left-handed opener flicks one off his pads for four, then punishes a short ball with an emphatic pull to the fence.
