Worcester market traders 'gutted' as operator quits
Worcester City CouncilTraders at a city centre market said they feel "heartbroken" after their operator pulled out, leaving the future of the site uncertain.
Cotswold Markets will stop running Worcester's specialised food and arts and crafts markets at the end of this year, citing falling profits.
Worcester City Council said it was trying to find a new operator, while stallholders said they would be "gutted" if the market could not be saved.
Councillor Adrian Gregson said: "The specialist markets bring variety and freshness to the city. We're keen to see them continue."
The markets take place once a month, with food traders operating on the first Saturday and arts and crafts stalls on the second.
They typically have between 20 and 25 stalls, which line the High Street close to the Guildhall.
Georgia Zikking, who runs Bakes by Gee, said she had enjoyed "many amazing years" at the market.
She added: "Honestly, we're absolutely heartbroken. Over the years, we've built up the most incredible customer base in Worcester.
"We've made so many lovely connections, met so many wonderful people and created so many memories at this market.
"It really does mean so much more to us than just turning up and selling cakes.
"We're keeping everything crossed that someone will take over the markets and that we'll be able to return in 2027," she said.

Other traders have take to social media to appeal for a new operator to come forward.
Liz Gerrett, the owner of Wychbold Fudge, said she was "gutted" in a Facebook post.
"We'd only attended a few this year, but we were looking forward to booking more dates next year.
"We really hope someone steps in to take it over and keep this wonderful market going."
Gregson said the council would try and secure a new operator, with the authority open to ideas on any potential changes.
"We want to see markets that will complement the shops and food outlets based in the city centre, boosting Worcester's offer as a place to visit, relax and shop," he added.
"The council is open to new ideas, so if potential operators want to come forward with new themes for these markets, we'll be very happy to listen."
In its reasoning for pulling out, Cotswold Markets cited "reduced commercial viability, profitability challenges and operational constraints".
Worcester's outdoor weekly market moved from Angel Place to the Cornmarket in September under new operator, Bluebell Events, following a council review.
