Mystery artist leaves Remembrance tribute

The child reaches upward while handing over the flower, which is the only element shown in colour. The artwork is painted on a plain light-coloured wall, creating a stark contrast between the figures and the background. A mystery street artist has left a special Remembrance tribute on the wall of a Royal British Legion club in Birmingham.

The black and white stencil, which shows a young girl handing a red poppy to a soldier, has appeared outside The Quarry Club on Quarry Lane, Northfield.

Staff at the community-run venue said they believe it could have been created by West Midlands street artist, Disney. Also referred to as D32 his work can be found across Birmingham and the wider region.

Paul Smith, a trustee of The Quarry Club, said the artwork had added something special to the venue ahead of its annual Remembrance commemorations.

He said: "It's a beautiful thing to see… we feel very lucky and proud to have it on our building.

"I was just completely shocked by it..[and] it's quite emotional actually."

The artist's distinctive style has drawn comparisons with the internationally recognised artist Banksy.

Smith said: "We've been advertising that we're Royal British Legion and what we're planning to do for Remembrance.

"I'm only assuming that the artist has seen that and just decided to put his display there and have his own act of remembrance as well."

The club is now looking at ways to protect the artwork and ensure it remains in place.

The surprise appearance of the mural comes as the club prepares to host a large Remembrance event on Sunday.

The event will include a parade, which begins at 10.30GMT. There will also be live music and refreshments.

Smith, who is a Royal Navy reservist, will act as master of ceremonies.

He said: "I think the way it's growing, it's going to be one of the biggest events in the city...so we're very proud to have it."
