Robert Smethurst bought Macclesfield Town out of insolvency in 2020

An investigation into a former Macclesfield FC boss has been dropped, police have confirmed.

Robert Smethurst was arrested in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on 19 May on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour.

Cheshire Police said the former co-owner of the National League North club had since been released without further action "due to insufficient evidence" following "a thorough investigation".

Smethurst said: "Of course I am relieved but I knew 100% that I was not guilty."

The 48-year-old bought the club out of insolvency in 2020 and installed former manager Robbie Savage.
